Contrary to what you feel, *I* believe this is one of the BEST moves that Microsoft can make. As mentioned in posts above, DX10 uses OS-layer
programming that simply doesn't exist in Windows XP. It is essentially an entire rewrite of the DX system. When people went from 95-98-ME-XP, the same
general DX layer followed. They are taking the opportunity with Vista to redo this layer and update it to both take advantage of viable future
technologies, as well as optimize it for existing ones.
The board was wiped clean and a new package was written. For that, we can expect far more efficient programming on older routines, and the inclusion
of NEW routines which will further enhance the GPU's use - offloading greater amounts of processing from the CPU, etc. etc.... all of which will lead
to better performance and better image quality.
I actually wish the MS would do the same with MSFS - just wipe the board clean, diseregard backwards compatability, and start from (reasonable)
scratch with the simulator. Although it's NEVER going to happen, that could lead to significant improvements in the efficiency, structure, and
extensability of the code.... this is partly why people were VERY excited about Fly!2 back in the day, only to have their hopes dashed by a publishing
house releasing the project before the developers had a chance to finish.

I'd wager this would be a "full version" copy... Upgrade pricing will most likely be significantly less.
