AI traffic only makes one engine noise - low-idling - because MS decided that you're very unlikely to be close enough to another aircraft in-flight to
hear it at high RPM. It's not possible in FS9 to change that; however, there are add-ons on AVSIM which change the AI sounds. Doesn't help much.
I always thought FS9 airports were WAY to quiet; even places like Heathrow can be virtually silent in FS9. I'm about 1.5 miles from Aberdeen Airport
(EGPD) in real life, in an office building with double-glazed windows, and I can hear aircraft here far louder than I can in FS9.
Get around the problem by flying only REALLY NOISY aircraft (BAC 1-11, Trident, B707, etc etc) and use a really high-quality sound pack (you know, the
ones that weigh in at over 40 MB on AVSIM). Turn your stereo volume up, switch to external view, and rev 'em up. AI traffic? Can't hear it!
