[old thread] Emergency. To declare or not to declare.

I'm really not sure what to do in case something gone wrong. If I declare the emergency, I would send my
passengers into panic and
panicking passengers is what every aircrews trying to avoid as it can hamper the evacuation precedure. On the
other hand, If I didn't
declare the emergency, I'll get penalties.

As fas as I know, as long as the problem is not too severe it's best not to declare emergency and keep it quiet. Or
at the least declare
emergency just before you land the aircraft.

What's your suggestion/opinion on this ?

If you don't want to get penalized, declare the emergency, but only for FsP initiated emergencies where the co-pilot tells you something is
wrong.

The passengers will get anxious and your satisfaction level will decrease while you're dealing with the problem, but after you
successfully get the aircraft back on the ground safely, all will be forgiven by the pax and you'll gain big time points for dealing with the
problem correctly.

First Disable all aircraft and Fs9 failures, this would ensure that the only failures you'll get
will come from FsP, anyway disabling aircraft failure (gauge comming from an author) is
not always possible so here's the trick:

1-If the copilot say something is wrong, you're 100% sure it's a FPS failure - DECLARE EMERGENCY
2-If you see something like oil temp increasing or fuel leak and you're sure that this aircraft doesn't
have a gauge that give failure - DECLARE EMERGENCY

If you have a doubt that a failure come from FsP or not:

1-right click on the mini display:
2-option
3-Check "display warning icon for failure"

If the ICON show "OK" don't declare if the icon show YELLOW - DECLARE AND EMERGENCY

With such method you should have 100% rate of right emergency declaration.

Thanks for that info Dan... I wasn't aware of the option to show the emergency status. I'll take a look at it.

Always better to scare the PAX then risk their safety! Put yourself in their position!

I agreed with you Dan. But, what the guy's saying is pretty true. If you declare an emergency, even a small one, every one in the plane gets
really, really scared. I understand if the pax get scared to hear the pilot that they have lost one of the engines but I don't think that
something like a fuel licking should scared the pax as if it was the engine thing. fspassengers does not make any different, please
correct me if Im wrong.

It would be a good idea to denote the kind of emergency since when you declare the emergency the flight attendants goes trought saying
to everyone about it on the plane. But come on! These pax are chicks for anything and once you land they get pissed off at you cause you
didn't land in the schedule airport, etc.

The PAX are going to be nervous anytime there is an emergency on board, or a diversion is required. I personally think it's modelled
quite well.

Would the pax react in the same way whether a windows cracks on board or an engine heats up?

I don't know about the real life emmergency procedures but I guess that there are several levels.

Something like a broken window or fire is obvious to anyone in the plane and declaring the emmergency will at least show the passengers that the
pilots take the situation in account.

Something like flaps or gear deployments can be unnoticed by passengers for a while but before landing they must prepare for emmergency landing and
then the emmergency should be declared soon enough.

Failures like fuel leakcould remain hidden to the passengers but must be decleared to ground control.

Should not be possible to split emmergency declaration in 2 levels:

1) sqwawk to 7700 would declare emmergency situation to ground and crew but remains hidden to the passengers.
2) public emmergency annoucement when the passengers must get ready for "rock and roll"

If I've got a flap failure on final, I'm not going to notify the PAX. On the other hand, an immediate decompression would require a PAX
announcement.

Sorry I wasn't more discrimatory in my previous post. It should be obvious though that the PAX would respond differently to different
failures. If the failure isn't serious, they wouldn't even be notified/frightened. For example if one of my AC Packs goes out, or I have an
outboard landing light that won't retract, they're not going to worry (because I won't let them know)!

I understand what you're saying, and perhaps it would be nice to have 2 (or more) different possible PAX reactions to different types of
failures.

I got a flap error on FL 18200, then I checked the mini-display as described, but
there are no colours , only a cross (X) looked like this

Correct me if i'm wrong: did you mean you deployed flaps at FL182 and you broke them but you didn't get the failure icon?

Hi,
B737-400. after takeoff with flaps pos 5 I switched flaps from 5 to UP (=0) in about 2400ft high.
During climb to FL182, above 11000 feet I requested for speed 250kts. and got it.
In about 14000 fts, I got a message (from Co_pilot): "Captain .... flaps ..... destroyed " or so; don't remember exactly.
But I was shure (95%) that flaps are UP.

That's the situation, to declare a emergency or not ........
Remember: FL140, speed about 380kts >>> a lot of time
