I played FSX quite a lot, but that was some years ago. I also played with FSPassengers back then, but never got to very high ranks.
I recently picked it up again and started flying with a career pilot (currently c3).
During my flights I've had a few incidents happen.
1) Blew a tire on my PA-20 during landing. Stopped the airplane and let passengers out. Got nice points and no penalties. Didn't declare an emergency though, but
heard sirens and stuff in the background immediately when the tire blew (cool effect). (video if the incident here: http://www.twitch.tv/ghroznak/v/9714891 )
Should I have declared, or does the game see it as obvious since it was during landing?
2) My airspeed indicator failed while doing a Tour flight in Alaska in my Republic Seabee (DLC aircraft from steam store). The airspeed indicator was just stuck at 0 kts.
I finished the tour flight and landed on the water runway at Ellesmere. Had no problems landing without the airspeed indicator and basically gauged the landing speed
from experience having done dozens of landings with that thing. Plus it was a water landing (which is easier).
However, should I have aborted the flight seeing as the instrument malfunctioned early on? Would a broken airspeed indicator 'justify' declaring an emergency?
3) Flying my V35 Bonanza from airport to airport in Norway the flaps malfunctioned during approach. The flaps were at 0 and jammed, so I couldn't extend them for
landing. I got the aircraft on the runway, but couldn't slow down so I had to take off again and go around. I managed to land the aircraft safely on the second try (with
help from the chat in my stream! Thanks guys!). However, the debriefing gave me +400 points for handling the incident, but then penalized me with -400 points for
landing without flaps extended(!!!). (Video of the incident here: http://www.twitch.tv/ghroznak/v/10216844 )
Should I have declared an emergency on this one? Would that have nullified the penalty for a zero-flaps landing?
I suppose the big question is...
How do I know when to declare an emergency and when it's just a situation which you should be able to handle?
