While I was doing a search on the Internet, I found this interesting tidbit about a new research the NASA is doing:

Basically, it would consist in representing the zone where you're going to land or fly over, probably coupled with a GPS system, so you can see
everything even with poor weather.
We'll see if this solution is adopted in future airliner designs.
