RYANAIR became Ryanwhere yesterday when a pilot landed his jet at a military airbase by mistake.
The Eirjet plane, operating on the low-cost airline’s behalf, was meant to take its 45 passengers and crew from Liverpool to Londonderry
in Northern Ireland.
But the blundering captain touched down at Ballykelly Military Airbase FIVE MILES away — as stunned Army personnel looked on.
The skipper announced: “Ladies and gentlemen we have landed . . . at the wrong airport. Please be patient.”
Passenger Johnny Borrow, from Londonderry, said: “I tried to tell the crew we were landing in the wrong place but it was too late because
the descent was almost over.
“When we landed soldiers ran towards the aircraft waving and laughing.”
Passengers were taken to the city by bus and the return flight to Liverpool was cancelled. British and Irish aviation chiefs are investigating.
A Ryanair spokesman said pilot error was to blame and added last night: “In over 20 years of Ryanair operated flights, such a mistake
has never occurred before.”
