Hard Landings

Hi All

Please help if you can.

I have just finished a 747 flight into JFK my touchdown speed was about 120knts i think, i had flaps on full and autobreaks on max.
As i touched down my passengers were screaming and their satisfaction went right down.
The landing was a little bumpy but no worse than a bumpy landing in reality it also says on the report there was excessive Gforces 5.60.
I have a feeling autobreaks should be lower for the aircraft but i dont have a checklist for this particular aircraft.

Can anyone help??? Explain???

Most likely, you touched down right before hitting the beginning of the runway-- that is the only reason passengers would scream; if you
just did a very hard landing, your co-pilot would have told you.

Yeah, definatly landed off the runway with a 500,000+ pound aluminum tube carrying more than 300 people. lol

What does it say in the flight log as how hard you came down? And as stated above, it could be you landed shy of the runway

u should never use autobrakes at max on a normal landing
i think from-experiance max autobrakes should be just for icy landings and other rough terrain landings-somone tell me i'm roung if i am

Also 120kts seems REALLY slow for a 747

I very rarely have touchdowns at 120KTS in the 737!!! For a 747, something's wrong at this speed. Is the aircraft stalling? That can
increase the PAX fear level.

I may have been toching down faster 120 was a rough estimate as im not using the computer i fly with to type this message.

I had flaps on full autobrake on full, although autobrake will not be used as much in the future.

I was using updated afcads but i am told these should work fine as they are not used in the same way as addon scenary.

I was not in excesive speed i felt everything was fine.

I feel that i rose the nose a little to high on touchdown (11dgs) but i have done this before with no effects.

Mybe it was just a mistake somewhere else.

WOW! 11 Degrees pitch up at landing! I'm not sure any Boeing aircraft is designed for this! Did your tail strike? That will send PAX fear
through the roof!

mybe so. I didnt hear the scrape and there was no damage to my aircraft so i dont think it was that,

I i said before, i was told i had pulled excessive g, but i just didnt do anthing that would do that, my rate of decent was slow, and it didnt
seem like a bumpy thouchdown.

hmm...11 degs is way too much. Usually, I can get a "kiss" on 737-800 with 135KTS, flaps 30, manual braking, and 3-4 degs pitch up.
Even during take off I always keep it below 10 degs until I get positive climb rate to avoid tail strike.

A background of tailstrikes has left me quivering with fear on every takeoff. I climb the 737-200 only 7 degrees up on takeoff if I'm feeling
confident and just miss trees and houses by inches, then think "phew cleared that lot" and up into the usual 3000fpm climb.

What was your FPS rate? You could have stalled just before landing, or struck the tail. Or both, as 120 knots at 11 degrees pitch up could produce.
