Help Clean up my comp

umm i was just wondering if there is anything/any folders i can clean out to make FS2004 run more smoothy. Like maybe aircraft i dont
use anymore. Does that have effects on frame rates at all?

any help would be appreciated thanks

Removing aircraft will help you browse through the aircraft list more quickly but it won't help much on frame rates. What i do myself sometimes is
have a proggy called 'filemon' running for 5 minutes in the background when fs9 is active. After that i check the log and everytime I'm surprised
about the number of files fs9 can't find or anything. After solving the problems found by filemon, the sim usually runs a lot smoother

A good defrag and intelligent install of FS9 is the best you can do for faster framerates.

I use FS-AOM (payware) to load / unload sceneries and aircraft that I use. This just helps to cut down the load up time but not the
framerates.

So true. I use AOM as well, but I haven't added anymore scenery or aircraft in a while.

Cactus, cleaning out all unnecessary temp. internet files and other files, frequently defragging your pc whenever you add/delete files or
programs or run FS9 for an extended period of time may help you out some. Anytime I run FS9 for a couple of hours or more, I always
reboot my pc, defrag it(using Power Defrag program), and reboot pc again. On top of that, before I run FS9, I open FS Autostart to shut
down the programs and processes I don't need running in the background. This certainly helps.

Speaking of defrag, is there a way to defrag the page file? Mine is all screwed up! I've got it with WinXP on my C: partition and FS9/X on
another. The FS piece is nice and clean but, the C drive with Win is completely messed up. After defragging, I re-analyze and it
says "You should defragment this volume." The "green" is splattered in about 5 ifferent places and there's a consisten red one in there
no matter what.

Any ideas? I'm sure this isn't helping.

"O&O Defrag" can defrag the page file.

It's a great defrag program, and way better than the default in windows.

To enable it to defrag the page file, go to File/Options, Then "Offline Defragmentation", Select "Execute once during next start-up", Select the
volume that your page file is on and click activate, Then ok and reboot.

That should do it. You can read a bit more about offline defragmentation in the help file.

Thanks for that - I just finished the C drive and it's STILL 26.81% fragmented! Little brown page file splots all over the place!

O&O also has another VERY useful option - it's called "complete/name" !

If you have FS on a seperate partition you want to use this option as it will organize files in respect to their name. As scenery and texture
files of an area tend to have consecutive name (12345.bgl 12346.bgl etc) they will be next to each other on your HD after defragmenting
and such your HD's read/write head won't have to do the "pinball syndrom" when reading them

Yep, that's the way to defrag, though depending on the size of your HDD and how much you have on it, it might take some time.
The offline defrag option doesn't defrag the entire HDD, so for a good defrag go for offline, Complete/Name, Offline. That's how i do it.

If it's you'r first time defragging with O&O, maybe use "Space" defrag first, as it is recommended in the help file. Then go for Complete/Name.
