Is it worth it? I can overclock my video card a bit. Will it give me any significant performance boost and is there a big risk to my graphic card?
OT- Overclocking?

It depends on the cooling and how much you overclock it. If you overclock to much its gonna overheat and the cards gonna blow up literlaly. A little
bit should be fine, not sure what the performance increase will be though.

Very complex topic !
In general I would NOT reccommend overclocking without profound knowledge of what you are doing. I also do NOT see any significant improvement in performance in general. This field is something hardcore gamer or tech-geeks (like me) would do...mostly to show off We MAY speak about improvements in the 3-5% range and when you look at your average framerate in fps ....that is NOT significant ( example 26fps + 5% = 27-28fps. Just by installing a decent soundcard I gained more than double Greetz Carsten

I always think my machine is good enough(P4 3.2GH +2GB DDRAM + 256 PCI Graphic Card) but I get bad FPS sometimes. Especially while on the
ground, at a detailed airport, with bad weather. But at 3-5% isn't really going to increase my 10 FPS on takeoff by a whole lot. Not worth doing it in my opinion. Thanks for the advice though.

Edit: just read your post here: http://www.fspassengers.com/forum/showth...?tid=13907 I'm off buying a soundcard... Post Edited ( 09-07-06 07:31 )

I bought a sound card simply to take the load off the CPU, it worked, but even with a cheap sound card you can get some real good sound. Bass boost is
a plus too.

Installed soundcard...
Framerates in EDDF are now between 15 and over 20 FPS! Never had over 20 FPS in EDDF!

I'm going to look into buying a soundcard too. Usually, buying hardware hasn't really been going well for me. Even though I bought a 256MB PCI Nvidia
card, very small boost was noticed. Also upgrading my RAM from 512(which is how it came with the PC) to 2GB now, and still not a lot of difference. But I bet if I was suddenly to take them all out, my FPS would be around 5. So do I need some king of super-expensive card or can I just buy a cheaper one?

Quote:ivo wrote: Nope, you don't need the super-dooper-hyper-withallthegimmicks-microvaveable-soundcard I made some good experience with terratec soundcards although I got myself the Soundblaster X-fi Extreme, but that is due to the fact that I also do a lot of soundstuff (when not simming). Do NOT look at usb-soundcards as they adversly affect your framerates. Also a good idea is to defragment your harddisk on a regular basis and while we're at it....get yourself a defragmentation program - not the toy microsoft supplies with XP ! I use O&O and it is noticeable !!!!!!! Run it two ore three times in a row as the results will improve every time. Regarding your videocard: Do you have the latest drivers for it installed. Personally I HATE updating but if there is ONE part where I always do it, it's the graphics department. I could give you a ton of advise how to properly install your windows but I guess it would require a new thread (I don't know what the maximum threadlength is...I should ask DAN) and it's not the "PC-helpline". But if there is a demand for it.............shout Greetz Carsten Geetz Carsten P.S. Average framerate at EDDF with 50% traffic, high detail and dynamic scenery settings is 25fps with D820-7600GS-PCIe256MB-1GB so it's NOT the killer machine (as I still wait for the new MB , CPU and graphics...grrrrrrrrrrr) Post Edited ( 09-07-06 22:17 )

I felt the need to bump this thread since I have been tinkering with overclocking my new rig.
So far I have been able to stress test my Intel E6750(2.66 Ghz), socket 775 at 3.1 Ghz without any failures. CPU temps average 77 deg. F. But, I had to bump up the Vcore to 1.376 and bump up the memory voltage to 2.05(adjusted timings, too). Keep in mind I do have the Monsoon Lite CPU cooler as well as 3 -120 case fans that keep the sucker adequately cooled. And, my RAM is Corsair Xtreme w/heat spreader 2 x 1G. For this to run properly, I had to unlink the memory from the CPU. I tried overclocking to 3.2 Ghz but it just wasn't stable enough for me to go that high. I have run FS9 with almost everything maxed out and at the highest resolution(1680), and have found the only thing that causes any hit on frame rates is heavy cloud formations....detail clouds at 100% but cloud draw at the minimum. I have frames locked at 25.... 99% of the time it's solid 25 until the weather plays a factor. When using a heavy add-on like the PMDG 747 or SkySim MD-11, frames drop to 10 or 11 when in heavy cloud conditions. So, I know exactly where the frame killer is. Since I use GE Pro for all weather textures, I have tinkered with using Ceilosim for sky textures and GE Pro for ground textures. I get much better frame rates using Ceilosim for sure. Just my 2 cents worth

Indeed, Intels new CPU's are fantastic OC'ers

You're correct,Ryan. I was testing different cloud percentages. Anything less than 50% is quite noticable but the frames are better. On a
cloudless day/night, I can achieve a solid 25 FPS throughout a flight....even at 1680 resolution and AA at 16X(SLI configuration).

Did you try DXT clouds? You can't tell the difference either and much friendlier for the framerates You can set them as an option in AS
