Axtive Sky6 --OUCH!

After some 'pressure' (lol) from other forum members, I opened my sporran and bought AS6.

Oh Dearie me!

Here is text of latest message to AS6 forum...


Well it gets better and worse!

Disregarding Radar altogether, I managed to take off from Innsbruck, in real world weather at sunrise. OK, I say that it was stunning, with
early morning clouds under and over the Alps.

Then, as I reached cruising altitude of 31K, Fs crashed! No warning, no indications, just desktop in a naanosecond!

I had climbed through nice fluffy clouds no problem, enjoying the looking behind at cloud just gone through, and generally just changing
views, no problem....then desktop!

Other change is on the ground..when suddenly my trusty Wingman Force 3D decides to not allow AXIS steering on ground without heavy
pull to the left.

Now all of these things have never been a problem till AS6. I would expect FSUIPC to maintain current settings but to lose key
commands, joystick axis, system stability, frame rates (With Radar activated) from 25fps to around 6fsp, and general nonsense to what
was a very stable sim, seems to be pushing my limit!

Any ideas?

Everytime I install an addon to fs9 such as UltimateTraffic or PMDG aircraft I make sure the installer has not changed the FSUIPC .dll
inside the modules folder to an older version. That can mess you up.

Another then to try is to delete the fs9 cfg. file and let it rebuild in mine I have to add again changes I've made such as [OLDMODULES]
FSsound.dll=1
FSUIPC.dll=1
SOARRec.dll=1

or "TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=400". fs9cfg file for faster texture rendering

I have not purchased Active sky as yet so I don't know the glitches of it yet.

I know that with some video cards such as mine, Nivdia, it was necessary to update the drivers and also to reduce the antialiasing
setting from 8s to 4 some people deselect antialiasing completely so the screen is not split while using the fs pax addon passengers
status window.

In the flight sim hardware display settings to deselect "render to texture" option, to eliminate flickering screen. Once I did that I generally
get frame rates around 34fps with traffic at 100% and the latest weather installed and fs9 options maxed out for the most part. While
flying the PMDG Queen of the sky

I also shut down most other uneeded processes though I followed the instrctions at this page for xp: http://www.BlackViper.com: Windows XP

I really don't know how Active sky affects frame rates however

I know other people on here are very pleased with the effects of active sky so probably you will find a solution. I hope something in the
above will help out .

Please check your eventviewer, is there anything mentioned about it? Especially which dll is involved?

Can be a FSUIPC setting. There is a possibility to disable strong winds at ground level which can cause this behaviour.

was a very stable sim, seems to be pushing my limit!

Did you read the manual, did you check their support forums (their support is excellent)? How did you setup your radar in the options, which settings
did you use, what resolution for the radar and which render system?
Last question, do you have the unregistered version of FSUIPC or?

I have already re built my config, and looked at anti aliasing stuff, removing the option completeley.

Old modules stuff I have NOT looked at yet and I appreciate the link to Viper....that is very interesting stuff I am sure, but site is being
constructed.

Desktop in a nanosecond, must be a memory issue, the speed it closes down has to indicate this.

I am still in the learning curve for AS6, and senior moments make this harder to get to grips with as it really is quite a huge options add
on.


Having said that the eye candy is superb (what I have managed to see so far), and worth perservering a while before i get fed up and
kiss £20 goodbye!

Its always the old trade off in Fs world, that has in the past equalled £20 add on resulting in £1000 rig upgrade! Never said there was any
sense in all this!(g)

This time howeevr, I intend to stick with perfectly functioning HP 2.4 1GB Ram Nvidia 5800. I have to remind myself that rig is NOT just for
FS stuff, but crucial to our home needs.

I shall report back as I progress, or fail to progress, with Active Sky.

FSUIPC setting....I understand the reply, but feel that its too consistent to be wind problem. Unregistered FSUIPC only.

Radar I set at 120 miles as recommended, and kept it B&W. No difference, dead sim if activated..will not turn off!

Support forum so far been great for AS6, yet no reply to above mailing. Still to tackle FSUIPC forum.

I stick at Innsbruck as I feel this is an ideal maximising everything airport, where if sim works it will work anywhere. So, to manage all this
(without Radar) and then crash to desktop at cruising altitude was strange to say the least.

I was a Beta Tester for Fs 98, and used to be quite 'hot' on Fs issues, left it for a good while only to have passengers bringing me back
into the fold. Sadly, much of what I knew is no longer remembered or relevant!

So, its all FS Passengers fault! OK! (lol)

OK, did you try recalibrating the joystick?

Manual has been looked at....but without radar activation all is working in that FP is created, weather generated, downloaded into FS, and
FPS good 22-25fps.

The radar has some options like "alternative rendering" (don't have asv on this pc but i thought it was called like that) Also, don't choose for the
highest resolution within the radar options

I had a very similar problem with Desktop crashes once I had installed ActiveSky - I eventually reckoned on it being the FSUIPC.DLL file. To test this, I went to Peter
Dowson's homepage (the creator of FSUIPC) located at http://www.schiratti.com/files/dowson.html, downloaded the latest version (v3.44) and placed it
in the "MODULES" folder under my FS9 default folder, thus overwriting the FSUIPC.DLL file that ASV had placed in there. This has cured the problem for
me, so it may be worth a try...?

As to the "pulling to the left", I have had this as well in the past and deleting the FS9.CFG file solved this one for me (the file can be found in the "C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9"). FS9 re-creates the FS9.CFG file when you next run it. Oh, yes, you may also want to delete all saved flights as this can be a problem too...

Hmmm, I have Active Sky 6 and have not had any problems at all, but we all must remember that whenever you install something into the
sim, there is always a risk that something will be overwritten or changed, or even have some kind of data corruption, incompatibility.

Each computer is like a human being. We are all similar, but different and a program installed on a computer is like a human
medication. What might work for many might have reaction in others.

I have to say though that I cant think of anything that might be helpful other than what has already been mentioned.

Indeed! Latest version is 3.52 which was created to 'fix' issues with earlier .dll.

Possibly a backward .dll needed?? Who knows?

hmmm i havent had any problems with active sky 6 Actually i was doing a flight from katl to ksfo yesterday and it works soooo well. It
was really some bad weather and when i got to about 12000ft i has such bad turb and could see the towering clouds (thunderstorm
clouds) for miles and miles away

Make sure you do not have an entry in your fs9.cfg that says rendertotexture=0 If you have that line, you WILL crash. Just something else to look
at. I also have ASV6 with no issues but I know that doesn't help you...

Not to preach but I have started the following procedures prior to installing ANY add-on. I bought a 300 gig removable drive to do this and yes, it
could be the most anal retentive obsessive compulsive FS routine to date . I was getting CTD, Out of memory errors with PMDG PSS and LVL-D so I
decided to format completely, put FS on its own build of XP and then dualboot another instance of XP for EVERYTHING else. Thus far in my testing I
have already found 2 add-ons that cause major issues...
My procedure is as follows...

1. Only ever install one add-on at a time.
2. Take the time to test each one individually to notice any abnormal errors or crashes.
3. If you are installing from scratch and use a lot of sophisticated add-on planes, install them first and test each plane individually for a few
days prior to installing the next.
4. Install all global add-ons next, things that interface with every plane you fly.
5. Install all local scenery last

6. Prior to the instalation of ANY add-on, I do the following every time.
a. Do a system restore
b. Back up your app data FS9 directory
c. Back up your entire FS directory
d. Install new add-on
e. Clear out temporary files from temp
f. Defrag drive
g. Test for a few days....

I also keep a single text file in two places that contains the contents of every order e-mail I ever receive. As soon as I get the e-mail I add the
contents to the text file so when re-installing I have all of my keys and codes in a single directory and single file....

Now, if anything goes wrong I pull a system restore, copy my directories back over and I can try the whole process again just to ensure it was not
something in the install procedure. I finally feel like for the first time I have a "controlled" FS environment.

I do this as well!! Even have all my passwordy thingies backed up on CD!
Having said that, I am trying hard to think where I am emulating you elsewhere other than considering buying an external HD for FS
alone. Oh Yes I clean out TEMP folder!!

I have no line rendertotexture in .cfg file.

My dearly beloved one, is out tonight, so I shall spend some time on this quandry...once again we fill the exiestentialist need to break
what is working and what we enjoy, to bring on Angst (whomever she is!)

Start Menu, MsGames, Flight Simulator, Troubleshooting, Reset....This does FsConfug thingy.

External DVD burners are cheap but I know you, you are just like me and you would still end up with at least 10 DVD's ~ 45 gigs. It is much easier to
just go out and get the external hdd an keep a copy of everything on that. I even have it listed as bootable with Norton Ghost and an image available
in case things really go south

Ron,
Lets try and get you up and running. Have you selected a texture set within ASV? Which cloud set did you select, personally even with a very strong
machine I use the 128. Did you enable Dxt for the clouds. I can't remember off the top of my head, I am mid flight right now but is there still a
mip setting for the clouds. I always use mip enabled DXt clouds. Have you tried uninstalling ASV, performing the same flight and then
re-installing? I know it is a long shot but with the seasons just changing in FS, you never know... I have seen strangere things happen.

Finally, what are your hardware specs and what driver version are you using for your video card specifically.

Sorry for the barage of questions but hopefully we can get you to enjoy the time you have to yourself right now
