You really want that thing to hum?
Put a matching HDD in and STRIPE RAID them. You'll be amazed.

How do you think FSX will run on my new rig?

Stripe RAID? I'm not familiar with that one.
Well I turned off FSX Anti-Aliasing and cranked up the AA on my video card as well as the filtering. I'd turned filtering in FSX off but it looked crappy and left it on. Will I get any benefit from having them on in software AND video card? Anyway, I picked up one fps having it set that way, but it was overall alot smoother. I also ran the texture conversion stuff I'd read about. I have yet to administer any of the fsx.cfg tweaks that are so abundant. I was also able to get one of my RAM sticks working so now I'm up to 1.5 GB. I didn't snap any screenies as my time was limited but holy CRAP it looked nice. I can't imagine what kind of machine Microsoft uses to make their screenshots and videos look so good and so smooth.

Here are some of my FSX screenies - I really like the graphics of the new sim; now we just need FS Passengers update...
I've been fooling with my PC performance tuning as well, currently I can't keep overclock because my board (EVGA nForce 680i) has BIOS and SATA/RAID issues; they'll fix it eventually... I didn't get to FS X config files tweaks yet, all on defaults so far. BTW, these screenshots are not edited (resized from 1280x1024 only) so the quality may not be optimal. The frame rates are adequate but at large airports there is drop of fps off course....

I ran futuremark....my score was 7272 which I'm gathering was pretty good since it was only like two lines from the max score.

I'm getting nearly 8400 marks at stock speeds with gts: http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=729397 With slightly overclocked system I get over 10k marks and hoping to reach between 11-12k marks once I get the system stable when overclocked higher. That should make FS X happy even at busy airports, although it’s never going to be as one would really wish to see it. I think that dual GTX in SLI and CPU clocked over 3.4GHz would be about right configuration to get FS X running smooth with most graphical setting at maximum detail.

Hate to be a barer of bad news but your rig may not cut it with FSX.
I just got myself a new Mesh computer with the following: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6600 Dual Core Processor(2.40GHz,4MB Cache,1066MHz) Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional Edition Aluminium ATX Midi Tower + 550W PSU - Black ASUS P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe PCIe Mainboard - Pentium® D/Core™ 2 Duo - ATX 2048MB DDR2 533MHz Memory - (2x 1024MB) 320GB Serial ATA Hard Drive with 16MB Buffer Super Format SONY 18x Dual Layer DVD Writer +R/-R/RW/RAM 2x 512MB nVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT- nVIDIA SLI Configuration With that I'm getting below 20FPS. I have now just ordered the following Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Extreme X6800 Dual Core Processor(2.933GHz,4MB Cache,1066MHz) Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005 Aluminium ATX Midi Tower + 900W PSU - Black ASUS P5N32-E SLI nForce 680i SLI(C55XE) Mainboard - Core 2 Duo/Quad-Core - ATX 4096MB DDR2 900MHz Memory -( 4x 1024MB Kit) 640GB (2x 320GB Serial ATA Hard Drives) Super Format SONY 18x Dual Layer DVD Writer +R/-R/RW/RAM 2x 768MB nVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX - SLI Configuration The Price? Let's just say with the other bits , and pieces that go with a computer (screen, mouse keyboard etc) it is over £3000.00 I will let you know how I get on with it, and whether I get decent Frame Rates. 3dMark has gotten a patch (get it here http://www.futuremark.com/download/3dmark06patch110/ )...
I have bought an 7900GT card for about $200 and I increased from (6600GT) 1700 points to 4400 points, I will need to run the patch and do some comparing now... I cannot complain at FSX performance - but it's all about sacrifising some settings until GeForce 9800GX2 ! Post Edited ( 12-24-06 02:44 )

Sorry for late reply...

Generally, users will see a read/write performance boost of about 1.5X over the usual single drive configuration. I have my system set up like that (twin 160GB 7200RPM SATA @ 1.5) and I can honestly say that is my only "saving grace" alowing me to run FSX to the point where it is actually enjoyable. I think one of the big keys with FSX is going to be your machine's ability to exchange data between the processor/video and the HDD in the most efficient means possible. |
