how to use vintage planes?

I'm trying to set up a FSPassengers company founded in 1920. Unfortunaltely planes then had neither (parking) brakes nor flaps. Is it possible to use
these planes (at all, since no parking brake) and when in use get no penalties for not using flaps (the planes have no flaps)?
Basically I want to be able to use Jennies, Vega's etc.

For the breaks, go into your aircrafts folder (/fs9 / aircraft / insert-aicraft-name-here), find the aircraft.cfg and find the part that starts with
"[breaks]" and add this line:
"parking_brake=1"
If it does not have the line in it (ie, it has no breaks of any sort) then add both lines

The penalty for flaps can be disabled, just go into the FSP folder ( /fs9 / fspassengers / config) and find the more_option.cfg. About half way down
it you will find:
DisableFlapCheck =0; // disable flap not set penalty
Just change the 0 to a 1

Additional info for others interested: you also have to make an entry for "toe_brakes_scale" if the aircraft does not have a value for it (i.e. the
Curtiss Jenny)
example: toe_brakes_scale = 0.3 //Brake scalar.

I use Vintage (20's and 30's) and Classic (40's and 50's) aircraft almost exclusively in FS9 and with FsP. The FsP damage, repair and
economic models do not lend themselves to propliner operations very well but there are some effective work-arounds that you can use.

Don't know how to disable tailstrike (always touch down on the mains with taildraggers and let the tail drop on its own as speed bleeds
off) but there are some things that you can do to enhance FsP with the oldies:

Create your own currency in the Money_currency file of the FsP config folder for example:

Currencyname=1935 Dollars
CurrencySign=$
CurrencySignInFront=TRUE
CurrencySeparator=.
CurrencyExchangeWithDollars=10.0686

Disable the flaps and roll off runway penalty. I used to get nailed for big points losses landing on the grass airfield at London Croyden
and took a number of hits flying flapless airliners until I got wise.

Add flight attendents to all aircraft, they were regulars on everything after the Boeing Model 80 (from 1927 and available as freeware from
Simaviation).

All of your seats should be at First Class rates in your payload models since only the rich could afford to fly (a one-way ticket from London
to Singapore on Imperial Airways cost more than a years' wages for a teacher). Food and drinks should be free or very cheap as well.

If you don't have Golden Wings 3, get it. I created a second FS9 installation just to fly the oldies in the GW3 world.

Don't use ATC (as late as 1936 there were only something like a dozen ATC radio towers in the Continental USA for example).

I haven't redone the F/A briefing so when she goes on about emergancy exits, oxygen masks and electronic devices, my vintage FsP
passengers just ignore her. They probably can't hear her over the roar of the engines anyway.

Visit Bluegrass Airlines and DC3 Airlines for lots of neat period stuff.

If all of this is old hat, then just disregard if you like but in any event, Have Fun flying the Old Way.

Thanks for the reply.
I currently have 3 FS9 installs: FSGW3 for the vintage planes, one install for CalClassic and 50's and early 60's period stuff and one for all the
modern jets. I use 1920 dollars for my vintage stuff. My only problem is with the Vega's. They get a tail strike penalty when standing still at the
start of a flight. I tried to ignore that, but my company went bankrupt in a hurry because of the repair costs. At the moment I don't use the Vega
anymore :-( and they were the only planes with a decent capacity load for C0. So now I am in career mode flying a Junkers W33 untill C3 when I can fly
a Fokker F VII, if I can afford one by then. My begin capital was about 51k and I make about $50 for a short flight.
Anyway thanks for the advice and I am glad that I'm not alone in my obsession ;-)

I felt your pain with regards to the tail strike thing but had never flown the default Vega with FsP or otherwise. Created a payload model
for it and after many tests, alterations and reloads, go to the aircraft.cfg and under contact points change the line:

point.6=2, 0.00, 0.0, -3.20, 800, 0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.000, 0.0, 0.000, 0.0, 0.0, 4.0, 0.0, 0.0

to

point.6=2, 2.00, 0.0, -3.20, 800, 0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.000, 0.0, 0.000, 0.0, 0.0, 4.0, 0.0, 0.0

I noted no difference in the external view and could not detect any significant effect on the flight or landing characteristics but it solved the
tailstrike penalty problem. Is it my imagination or is the default Vega really a horrible aircraft to fly? Much prefer Dee Waldron's Boeing
247D if I'm going flapless...

BTW CalClassic is hands down my favorite aviation web site, I'm chris_c in the Forum there. And now, off in a Canadian Pacific DC-6B to
take a load of party'ers from Vancouver to Tom Gibson's 1959 Las Vegas and then maybe cruise the Strip in the GW3 Ford.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the help, I tried the altered line in the config file but it did not effect the tailstrike in my case.
I always try to start a company with the bush flying settings: almost no money, only able to fly SEP at the start. The Vega is perfect in a 1930
setting for that kind of work because of the payload. I like the fact that I have to work hard and make no mistakes to be able to buy new planes ....
The Vega can be quite a handfull, but the reward of taking off, navigating (without use of VOR or NDB) and landing savely at the intended airport
makes up for it. Untill you get the damaged plane to repair for the tailstrike that is...

Far be it for me to continue flogging the horse after it has died...
I know that I got the default Vega C to work on two seperate FsP flights, I crashed one and aborted the second over Puget Sound. You
noted that the contact point fix didn't work and so I went back to square one and compared the aircraft.cfg file of the default Vega with the
following vintage taildraggers:
JBK Vultee
JBK Fokker FVIIa
JBK Avro Ten
HP-42
FSDB Electra
Default Ford Trimotor
JBK Vimy Commercial and
Brian Gladden's Noorduyn Norseman (wheeled)
There is a anomoly in the default contact points as suspected and for all of the above that I have FsP payload models for, all have the
value of 1 for contact point 0 whereas the default Vega has a value of 3. Please try this fix for contact points line 1 as follows:
Change
point.0=3, -20.69, 0.0, -3.30, 1200, 0, 0.4, 0.0, 0.400, 2.5, 0.595, 0.0, 0.0, 7.0, 0.0, 0.0

to

point.0=1, -20.69, 0.0, -3.30, 1200, 0, 0.4, 0.0, 0.400, 2.5, 0.595, 0.0, 0.0, 7.0, 0.0, 0.0

I had changed this line but failed to pass the change onto you breaking the cardinal rule when editing .cfg files, never change more than
one variable before a test. Have tried this with the default Vega on three FsP revenue flights with no more tail strike penalty. Hope it
works.
