Freeze

Hi all,

yesterday I installed the demo of this great addon and immediatley purchased it...

But since then I had 2 freezes, while I never experienced these previously (in more than one year). Nothing else has been added to FS2004
recently...

Whatr happens, simply, is that after a random flight time (first time was 5-6 minutes, the second was around 25-30 mins) the sim freezes.
The screen is no longer updated, the sound keep being reproduced and there is no rensponse to any key from the sim. I an switch and
work normally on other applications. But there's no way to stop/close FS2004, neither via task manager and trying to stop fs9.exe process..

Any uidea?

I experience a similar issue this Sunday (freeze) and it turned out to be a faulty add-on scenery which required a patch.

It might sound weird, but although FsP is usually not the direct reason for crashes/reason, it seems to shed a light on the defaults in other add-ons.

So your problem doesn't even have to be linked to some recently added software.

Were you using an add-on when this happened? Or flying over a 3rd-party scenery?

Like DBE said it is normally attributed to add-ons.

If a freeze happens, check your task manager to see how much RAM FS9 is using. I have found some add-ons both freeware and
payware have memory leaks or are corrupt somehow.

What add-ons did you add recently before installing FsP? And do you have the latest version?

Also try flying out of a different airport with a different aircraft on a different continent at a different time during the day with a different
season. Try changing as many parameters as possible.

I've had much better performance when setting my virtual memory page file manually. I had occasional stutters quite frequently, and this
fixed it. I'm not sure of the exact settings I used, however a would turn up great results.

I did once have a freeze due to a scenery issue... completely removing FS9, and reinstalling EVERYTHING fixed the problem. This
probably isn't what you wanna hear, but tracking down the cause of such "hiccoughs" can be very difficult (if not impossible). A complete
reinstall gets everything taken care of!

my current FS9 installatin is 8 week fresh.. I just have 4 addìon freeware scenaries relative to Italian areas on which I was not flying when
freezes happened. ON this: in both cases after resetting I restarted same flight and in both cases I've been able to finish the flight ok... sam
route.

The only ad-on I'v been using during these flight session is FSNavigator... that I've been using since years. Currently updated to last
version 3.47.

I have a suspect: freezes could be linked to CPU overheating, although up to now other "heavy" applcations never gave problems. My CPU
is gong up to 80°C and this is a new thing I need to fix...

Freezing could be linked to LOTS of things. I'm no expert on this, and as I mentioned above; removing my FS9 installation, and re-doing it
(no matter how painful it is!) was the solution for me!

If you've got CPU problems or the like, don't look to me for help! Sorry, that's just not my realm!

Your CPU is going to 80 C????? I really would stop all and everything then and first check that issue out. Might be something wrong with you cooling
also then...

There's another thread on this as well...I just replied to it a few mins ago.

What usually works best on a faster machine is to set the paging file to a minimum value and allow it to grow to the maximum value
(calcualated at 2X your total RAM). Also, you can change the registry so it cleans out on reboot.

In theory, that will force your machine to use your RAM, which is much faster, as opposed to the page file, which is cached off your HDD
and is slower.

I would definitely go down the route of checking your cooling, 80C is miles too hot for any CPU, if you carry on like that the poor thing's
gonna burn itself out rather rapidly. Check that your airways are all unblocked, fans clear of dust etc. How many fans do you have, you
may consider adding another case fan, is your CPU fan running at the right speed, go into BIOS to check this as it may be running slow.
All worth checking but you really need that CPU down to a max of around 50 degrees C.

And check that the fan is firmly attached to your cpu... Sometimes it might move a bit because of some transport or shock or so

Sorted out.

The dissy was no longer firmly pressed against the CPU. Maybe my daughter played with the case...

The average temp is now around 50°C and goes up to 66°C maximum. That shoul dbe fine for a P4 3.0Ghz...

No other freezing episode happened in last 2 FsP flights...
