wait till you have to change frequesncy then dont tune the new one and you can walk away when you come back you tune whatever centre is closest to you

Radar Contact 4 is the best for being able to walk away from your pc and do other things, as you can allow the FO to answer all radio
calls Of course, sometimes RC4 will try to steer you off course , so you would need to be close by when that happens. Otherwise, RC4
will bug you to death by calling you constantly to fly a certain heading until suitable for navigation.

it may be a stupid question but when does the flight log register your flight as a long flight? does it start from 3 hours or is it less, or just more?

If you are already at cruising altitude and you have nothing else to do other than stare at the controls for 10 hours,
there's no harm in accelerating and pretending the pilot just went to sleep. Don't forget to feed your passengers,
though. Staring at the screen is NOT flying. All you are doing is wearing down your computer components,
and wasting electricity (which pollutes the environment, etc).

I do what I'm doing right now; browsing the web and checking forums, rght now I am currently flying KSEA-PANC in the lovely Super 80, I
am using a kneeboard addon that allows me to browse the internet and watch movies (though I haven't figured out how to watch movies
yet; it came with a short 1:30 minute clip that works in the addon, but I can't get it to work with feature length clips on my machine) So
usually I just use the internet browser to check forums and get airport information and watch youtube. And yes, I am currently posting this
from my onboard browser at FL290 :D.

Don't you think your statement comes down to a personal preference? If a person decides to keep his/her
computer running 24/7, that's a preference. If they want to stare at a computer screen for as long, that is also

They can certainly stare at their screen for as long as they want. I'm not telling anyone what to do. I'm only
saying staring at a screen is not flying.

I wasn't talking about polluting individual homes, either. Computers consume energy. Energy production
causes pollution (we have not completely switched to natural energy yet). The more energy you consume,
the more global pollution you produce.

Most of the energy produced today comes from coal, natural gas, and crude oil. Not renewable sources.

Besides, the logic of avoiding time acceleration because you do not want to "cheat" breaks down when you
get up to do anything else. That is more of a cheat than using time acceleration.

And I'm still not telling anyone what to do. Just pointing out the options and facts.

ifly, points taken...but, I'm sure your activism regarding global pollution can be shared by others, but it can be shared in another venue, not
here. Besides, don't you think it sounds "preachy" to others when you add those tidbits into a subject that has nothing to do with the

I'm not sure what you mean by this being off topic. I thought it was entirely on topic. The question is
what to do about long flights, right? One option is to use time acceleration. Some people might not
like this option because it seems like a cheat, but if you really think about it, it's no more of a cheat
than what most people do instead. So that's not a valid argument. Just leaving the computer on
doesn't make you a better pilot, and you're wasting energy, etc.

Sorry, but how can this be a different topic? Are we not discussing all the pros and cons of every
choice? If we're not here to share different points of view and maybe learn something new and
change our minds about something, what's the point, right?

btw, I'm not saying we should all live in the dark. My computer is almost always on, but I'm also
using it for something. When I'm not home, I connect to it remotely. If I'm not going to use it for a
long time, I turn it off.

The question of using time acceleration is inevitable. Some people use it, some don't. I don't see why it has to be a childish fight, either. It can
be discussed rationally.

Using time acceleration is, itself, one of those things you can do on long flights. It's a valid answer. This way, you can monitor your flight for
problems. If you just leave the computer on and go do something else, you are definitely not flying, you are not improving your skills, you are not
making the simulation more realistic. You're not even looking at the scenery. If something goes wrong, you won't even know until later.

That's another thing you can do on long flights. Get up and leave. But why would anyone want to do that? How is this more realistic than using time
acceleration? Has anyone explained that?

I'm also curious about WHY people do what they do. If what they do makes more sense than what I do, I'll probably change my habits. If it's just a
question of "what do you do on your spare time?" or "what's your favorite ice-cream flavor?" then it's completely useless and boring to me, because
there's nothing to be learned from the answers. People are just going to state their personal preferences, and that's that. No explanation needed.

I thought this was a different kind of question. As in, "what do you do and why?" "How does that make you a better pilot?"
