I do it all the time when I fly my PMDG 747-400.

agreed, about the only thing my AP does is hold my altitude and level the wings after a course correction. Once I get on finals I fly it myself.

wow dang you do it with your pmdg 747-400?? OMG after a 10 hour flight I would want to fly the landing, thats the least I could do. Do you
even have a yoke?? or joystick? Now a days you really dont need one to fly, maybe taxi and take off but thats it..... ![]() ![]()

There's nothing wrong with autoland(or the autopilot) if you use it ones in a while. But if you do an autoland on every flight you will get rusty on
the hand flying part. Likewise, if you hand fly every time, you might get a little rusty on the autoland. In FS people doesn't take autoland seriously but in the RW its a lot more the hitting the APP button. ![]()

And 2, it really is pretty much that simple, just tune to the ILS frequency on both Nav radios, engage both autopilot computers and release the controls. I've flown a real A320 sim and this is pretty much how it is.

One company that I know for sure uses Autoland(sometimes) is Martinair. There is an ITVV Video in an MD-11 and the crew performed an autoland. 2) Maybe thats how you do it. ![]() altitudes certain things need to happen(like specific annunciations on the FMA) which the pilots need to look for in order to make sure that everything is working properly and the autopilot won't fly them into the ground. Like I said, pilots need to practice it on a regular basis in order not to forget everything. In the FS world things are simple, but in the RW the are procedures which need to be followed. ![]() Plus, if its there why not use it? It was designed to help us, not hurt us. I'm not saying you should use autoland every flight, but it doesn't hurt using it once in a while. Its new technology, so use it because it helps you. FMC's are there to help pilots and save money by achieving more economical flight. Every uses it. You don't happen to ride a horse to work, do you? You probably have a car? Like I said, new technology. Post Edited ( 08-13-06 07:36 )

Yeah I know what you're saying. Perhaps most was too strong of a word. Many airlines don't use it, but they will someday. I still think flat out
hand landing is better to do. After all, if we just let the computer do everything all the time there wouldn't be much of a reason for us to exist, would there be? edit: I feel that I should expand on what I said. I'm not trying to pick a fight here or anything like that. I'm just stating my personal opinion. The achievement of manned flight is, in my book, mankind's greatest accomplishment. So far at least. Ever since I was very young and I had RAF Tornadoes roaring over my head at low altitude where I lived in a little place called Darley, in the UK, I've wanted to be a pilot. I really don't care how much money I have to pay to realize my dream, or how much hardship I will have to endure when I'm just starting out with a flying job. There's just something about flight you know? There's a grandure about it, and I belive that there is something to be said for grandure. Somehow I think using something like autoland belittles flying. Don't get me wrong I love all these technological advancements that make things less stressful and more economical, but planes need pilots. If we just let these advancements like autoland keep coming pretty soon we flyboys will be obsolete. Computers will become so reliable that passengers will be willing to fly on a plane that has no human pilot. I hope that I don't live to see that day because it will make me very sad indeed. Granted this thread is talking about using autoland in a simulator and here I am rambling along talking about philosophy in the way I sometimes do when I'm sleep deprived. I just thought I should speak my mind. Post Edited ( 08-13-06 09:40 )

when I would use auto land the airplane goes with his nose right into the runway. on an article in fs9 they say it's impssible to do
autolandings with the default airplanes , but also the other airplanes I have don't do auto land. ![]() ![]() ![]()

depends what addons you have
the likes of pmdg, lsd, f1 atr all autoland

Quote:alphaone wrote: Actually many airliners cant land without an auto land. To tell you the truth airliners land more often with auto land than manuel land. Its very hard to manuel land a plane. Just because in FS all you do in aim the plane for the runway, in real world they have to keep checking their panels make sure they have a good air speed. They cant do that with them having to worry about manuel landing a plane. Thats why most of them use auto land.
