Boost FPS

Hello,

I have gained alot of money to spend on components for a new PC. I want to get a big FPS boost in FS9 by installing something new. I have tried
buying a new grahpics card (8800GTS), but they don't work on my PC. What else could be improved on this system? :

Intel Core Duo E6300 3.4GHZ
1GB DDR2 RAM
Onboard VIA Sound
nVidia GeForce 7600GT 512MB

What would be best for an increase in performance for FS2004, bearing in mind the 8800 cards don't work?

Whats your mobo? You could possibly run SLI. It isn't hard to do at all. Another stick of ram. Or possibly new ram, 2GB's Ram

New sound card, should fit in a PCIx1 Slot. Cheap cards, and they do improve FPS a bit.

Or, if you want to run your 8800GTS, youd have to get a new mobo and a new Power supply with a PCI 6 pin slot I believe it is.

Hey Alex!

Well, their are a few things you can do.

First of all, it depends how much you are willing to spend for the performance.

As Luis mentioned if you want to run an 8800 GTX/S you can always buy a new motherboard, which will support it.
Or you can still upgrade your card to something like a Geforce7950, and run SLI if your Mobo Supports it.

Upgrading the Ram might give you some extra FPS but would mostly just improve loading times. If you are running Vista then 2 gigs is a must, if XP 1
gig will do, but 2 gigs you will notice a difference in speed when loading, and doing many other things like surfing the net, and just booting up your
PC. Ram is a good way to start as it is relative the cheapest to upgrade.

Have you considered Overclocking a bit? You can squeeze out some more frames by overclocking your CPU, and GPU.
It looks really confusing at first, but it is free, and free is good

Regularly Defrag, and keep your PC in optimized health and you will get good frames that way.

Getting a dedicated sound card instead of your integrated one will give you a nice boost in performance.
And integrated sound card takes alot away form the CPU, and a decent dedicated sound card can be cheap

I have an MSI 7255 Mobo, but replaing the board would be expensive!

Is the 7900GTS any good? Or is it better updating the sound?

There is no such thing as a 7900GTS, only GS, GT, and GTX, as far as I know.

Well it is a hard choice for me to make, so I can only give you some reasons for both:

With the graphics Card:
Pro's:
- If you are building your home cockpit, you will have dual (or more) screens? If so you will benefit more from having a more powerful video
card, such as a 7900GTX
- You might get a sharper image, clearer, better looking image, with AA, and AS on.
Cons:
- Most expensive option. And you wont be getting a DX10 capable card if you want to move on to FSX, or up coming games.
Unless you get one in the 8 series, in which case only the 8600, and 8800 are worth it. But the 7900GTX will do amazing in DX9 games.

With a Sound Card:
- You should get better fps, by freeing up some CPU usage when it is really needed.
- if you want to have a good sound system in your cockpit (eg) 7.1 or 10.1 surround, you will get better sound quality. Most likely an onboard
sound card won't support 7.1 or higher, some might though I am not sure. If it does it will only take more away from the CPU when trying to run 7.1
- Cheaper then replacing a video card.
Cons
- Wont improve frames as much as a card like the 7900GTX or 7950GTX.

In short. You will gain more frames with an upgraded graphics card, and most likely a better quality image.
With a dedicated sound card, you will still gain frames (though not as much), and you will have better quality sound. Sound is cheaper.

However, others have said that they get a better performance in the sound card, looking at this :

My motherboard is not a very up to date one, and it was the reason why the 8800GTX didn't work, but I really dont know if my CPU etc will be
compatible with a new motherboard. Any advice?

Well I am not to sure which Motherboards are compatible with the E6300.

I would just search Google for "Intel E6300 compatible motherboards".

Though if you can add a 7900GTX, and a new dedicated sound card, you will have no problems breezing though FS9, new motherboard or not
