[O/T] weird PC Behavior

I don't know what has been going on lately, but now my PC is acting really strange. Whenevery I try to access the tast manager, I get an error
messege that reads " Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator". If I try to run the cmd, I get the same messege. but the only problem is
that there is only one user(me) on my computer, and and never disabled them. So I tried to run System Restore to an earlier point, only to get the
same messege that the administrator has disabled System Restore. Whats going on here? Does anyone know how to enable them again or what I should do?

did you just try to restart? that happened to me the other day and i just did a reboot, and it worked... Hmmmmm Maybe FSX is messing
with us for the new flightsim

I tried to reboot several times, and I even scanned my computer with a Anti virus problem. Found the culprit but my PC still hasn't returned to its
normal state.

First it tells me that it can't find Gpedit.msc , then it tells me that the administrator has disabled Registry editing.

Ok, I overcame some of the problems by just creating a new user name with Administrative power. But I still have one problem. While I can now edit the
registry, view the task manager, use command promt, etc, I still can't use System Restore. It gives me an error messege saying "System Restore has
been turned off by group policy. To turn on System Restore, contact you domain administrator." I went to support.microsoft.com and followed an article
on how to turn it on. But when I right click on My Computer, and then on properties, I don't have a system restore tab. Do you guys have one?

Sounds like indeed something went very wrong with your group policy settings. Now that you've created a new admin user, you should try to start up the
policy editor again (gpedit.msc) and see what's wrong....
Might have been a virus also or some over-active software messing around with your policies

when I try to start up the policy editor, I get a messege that says " Windows cannot find 'gpedit.msc'. Make sure you typed the name properly, and
then try again. To search for a file, click the start button and then search. " So not what can I do? Maybe whatever messed up my computer
deleted this file so now I can't access it. Is there any way to get it back.

I've got it, right where you said.

Is it not within reason to completely wipe everything and re-install? I know it's a big deal but, if you hit a brick wall, which it sounds like
you're close to, maybe you ought to consider it - save the important stuff to another hdd, like large downloads, etc. and start over.

Hopefully you'll solve it before you have to do that, though, especially with the limited number of activation runs with XP.

I have almost solver everything. I only need to get System Restore running again. Seems as my computer can't open gpedit.msc for some reason. It it
could, I'm sure I could solve the problem. Anyways, I can now use the Task Manager and the command promt and other things which I couldn't before. I'm
running some programs here, to try to fix my PC. I also scanned it with an antivirus program to remover all of the viruses.

btw, does anyone know the location for gpedit.msc so I can browse to it and see if its there? Also, if its not, where can I download one from?

If you scroll down to Active Directory Sites and Services you will see a sentece in red. That's the error messege that I'm getting. I tried to
download the administrator Tool Pack, but all of them are for XP Pro and none for home. So now what can I do?

I'm assuming that file is in your registry, right? Personally, I don't even know how to access those - I'd probably screw it up if I did.

You "added" a new admin profile or something right? Does this mean that your original admin profile is still intact? If so, I wonder if that
is what's causing the problem - kind of like forgetting your admin password on your own forum and signing up again and getting
moderator status - you still don't have control of the higher functions. Not sure if this is what's going on with your system - just thinking
with the fingers again.

I would probably just do an online search for that file plus "how to edit" or "location of file" or something along those lines. That's usually
how I find the answers to everything I come across.

Have you tried contacting Microsoft for direct support?

gpedit.msc should be in your system32 folder.
You can also try to start mmc. It's the management console and from there add a snap-in (to add, use the menu in the mmc) and browse for policy editor.

Looks like you need to reformat your hard drive and reinstall XP, Ivo. Something is seriously wrong if system files as missing.
