real aircraft landing - how?

one for the pro's (didnt know where to post this)

only ever landed a cessna and baron on flight sim, but when i try to get a real soft landing, i come across a problem

if i try to land with a vertical speed of under 100ft/m, get near runway - pitch the nose up a few degree's ------------ all i see is sky, i cant see
the runway no more and just have to hope i land on it

was wondering what it was like in real life, or if it was different in 747's 757's etc, where doing under 100ft/m with nose pitched up, do you
still have a visual of the runway???

excuse the dumb post, but only been on flight sim a couple of weeks now and in no way a pro

For flying real cessnas, with tricycle gear, I've never lost sight of the runway while landing (of course I'm used to a 12,100 ft runway). Even with
small runways, I haven't lost sight. How do you know when to straighten the nose on landing if you're crabbed, or if you're completely centered on
the runway when you cannot see it? In Flight Sim while landing, I'll usually turn the cockpit screen off on final, use ILS (if IFR, and autopilot)
until about 700 ft, then hand fly it in. I'm guessing it has something to do with the arrangement of the instruments in FS on the 2D panel. There
are so much that they need to fit on 1 panel, they have to make that panel bigger and bigger, thus harder to see runway on landing. Look at the
mooney with IFR panel, it damn near takes up the whole screen. Oddly enough, I did my first night training last night, I accomplished some of the
best landings I ever had (with crosswind too!), even though it was dark out

HH, how far along are you in training as i am also in training. One time i did lose training, but my rwy 26 has a large gradient and you can
not see the runway on any aircraft when flaring as the slope of the rwy is a bit extreme, also increases the roll-out extremely, though the
roll out on rwy 8 is so short i am always afraid im slammin on the brakes. good luck simming.

FSP calls out 50 40 30 20 10 doesn't that help a bit. Don't focus on what your vertical speed is flare at the correct height angle and speed and the
vertical speed will take care of its self.

You can adjust the vertical size of 2D panels. Just run your mouse to the top edge of the panel until you see a small vertical double-
arrow. Click and hold at that point and you can resize the panel. I always do this with the Cessna panels to compress them some in the
vertical axis. Then I do the same to the front view window to stretch it out some. (Use the bottom left of the window for this)

This gives a bit better visibility out the front during landinds, at the expense of some of the panel symmetry. But the resulting compressed
panel doesn't look too bad.

AeroJim, Im in Stage II, cross-country phase of training (About 39 hours logged). Currently doing Night navigation/recognition/T&G's. Like I said
earlier, I'm spoiled when it comes to runways, Kadena AB has 2 12,100 ft runways, I could take off and land about 3 times in a row if I wanted to

I'm surprised how many people use the autopilot until the last second. I turn mine off around 15nm from the airport and at 3000ft and fly
it in myself.

When climbing from the airport I hand-climb it until 10,000ft.

That's right... I can see the ground at all times this way Keep in mind that we also have windows on the sides of the flight deck. These
help with situational awareness when very close to the ground!

I've found that this feature doesn't work very well. Changes the view a LITTLE TOO drastically. Kinda hard to get it back right where it was
too (even though I think there's a key command for this as well). Too many damn key commands in FS9! Let's thank FSP for adding
EVEN MORE!

just space bar resets the view if i remember correctly Brad

i disable autopilot at about the outer marker normally... in case there's any changes in attitude when i disconnect the A/P as sometimes
seems to happen. For some reason im far better at visual approaches compared to IFR.
