BIRD STRIKE

I've not had a bird strike, but have had one engine failure on takeoff in a 747-400 as well as jammed landing gears...would not come up....I declared
my emergency and came back around and landed both...

from additional reading...it seems that on the landing gear I maybe should have just requested a touch and go first to see if it would unstick
them...is that correct? as far as the engine failure....could have continued on with 3 engines....but from what little knowledge of FAA regs here
in the U.S. returning is the requirement.

Hi Martin,

You did the right thing on both emergencies. It makes no sense to do touch-and-goes to release a gear that won't come up. That would only apply if you
were landing with 1 gear stuck in the up postion or in mid-position.

As for the engine failure, It's not worth taking a chance. Yes, you can keep flying but it's not safe to do so and you should land ASAPossible. That's
why in most civilized countries you must land as soon as practical when you have an engine failure. Remember, as a pilot in flight, you don't always
know the cause of the failure. What if it's gas contamination. #1 goes on the climb and you keep going. Then 2,3 and 4 give in the middle of the
Atlantic because the jet fuel is no good.

No failures yet(only flew once with FSpax), But man this add-on sounds so cool, Cant wait for a bunch of cool experiences.

If I set my failures to say 5%, wil it actually have a failure 5 times out of 100 flights?

P.S (only flew once with FSpax) Doesnt meant I dislike the program LOL, Just havnt had time to play FS at all lately, but my time is coming

Gerry, the 5% failure rate doesn't necessarily automatically fail 5 times out of every 100, it just means that on any given flight you have a
5% chance of failure.

The law of averages says that you will have a failure on 5 out of every 100 flights with a 5% failure rate...but you might actually have 8 or 9
failures out of 100 flights.....or you might only have 1 or even none.

Sooo...I'll quit before this gets boring....the bottom line is this...fly long enough with FsP and you will get a failure (as long as you don't turn
them off)!

I only have about 20 flights and I already had a bird strike.

... and there are other factors, too:

1. The region of the world you're flying: in some of them you can't get a good maintenance and your plane is most likely to suffer a failure
(see the dangerous.cfg)
2. How well you are doing the maintenance on your plane.

So even with a base 5% it can climb up to 20% (example only!!!)

As long as we're on the topic of emergencies, I was "pleased as punch" to see that when I touched my A320 down and the brake line
blew a hole I wasn't penalized for using the reverse thrust below 60 kts. Had to stop it somehow and everytime I touched the brakes, I
was jerked hard left beyond the control of the nosewheel/rudder.

I hope I don't get any bird strikes, I've only got single engined aircraft, so a bird strike would pretty much be fatal.

Not necessarily my friend! If you'll notice above, I was in a DH82...single engine. A bird strike in my case only did enough damage to
cause the oil temp to go sky high resulting in an eventual near engine failure. When I landed my engine was still operable, albeit very
weak.

As Gibbmusic, I had my first birdstrike happen in a single engine prop. I was flying a Cessna Caravan Amphib (decided I'd see how well fsp handled
water landings). I loaded up, go and take off, and establish my climb. About 30 seconds after I raise my gear I heard a noise and my engine sputters
and dies. Co-pilot helpfully says "We got a flameout" (... A flameout? Isn't this a prop not a jet??). I figure I have enough altitude
that I can try and quickly restart the engine, which seemed to respond, but died out again quickly. (I didn't notice any rising tempature, the engine
cut out before anything like that seemed to happen)

Since my goal had been to test water landings, and I didn't have much altitude, I decided not to risk turning around for CLT and just established a
glide to land in Lake Wylie. Declared a mayday, feathered the prop and glided in to a gentle landing on the water. FSp handled it quite well : )
(although I later disovered not to take an amphib and try to cross from water to land, as in a grumman goose, it didn't take that too kindly )

Thats neat, That the 5% failure doesnt mean 5 out of a hundred, But 5% chance of failure on that one flight.

What do you sim pilots use as a number for failures, I got mine at 2% but just wondering what yous have it set at

I left mine at 5%, it may be high for realism purposes...but this is simming and I'm in it for the fun as much as the reality.

Try taking off at an airport near any tree that is over my car. That seems to be where most birds like to hang out lately.

Seriously, I got my bird strike in the Alaskian wild....go try some bush piloting.

I have tried to do a flight from Washington Dulles to Heathrow several times.....all goes well until the aircraft goes over 18000 ft.. then for
some reason it pitches up and stalls.....I have tried several combinations .....fly straight to 45000, which is below its max flight level.....go to
11000....increase to max speed, then climb.....change loading of cargo...no cargo...fuel....but still with the same results....

any ideas?
