Nobody talked about Cargo aircraft, they have a HUGE door opening outside and up, and only attached by several system all around the
door... And yes, it happen that some of the hinges (no sure it's the correst word though) get broken, at this point you can hear an enormous BANG, like if you are firing a canon, and obviously the aircraft is depressurising quite fast, so to be sure not blowing the whole door away (that will be mostly fatal) you better slow down and hurry down as fast as you can. But this is quite rare... And yes, this is a true story (happen on an Air France 747-200 Cargo back in 70's), all safe back on ground... Oh by the way, yes you can open an airliner door (but in specific condition of course). Air France (again) made some test on a Boeing 707 back in 70's (again), they wanted to know if it could be possible to bail out a package from a rear wing door to simulate a bomb on a plane. The pilots reach proper altitude and speed, open the door but 1° the door was not opening wide enough for the package (but still opening), 2° the noise made by the engine outside almost made all people on board deaf (only test crew obviously). And yes again, it is a true story, I have proof for both... Alex Kratz FRANCE

A cargo door on a 747 was opened 'uncomanded' some years ago, from Honolulu. The fuesalage was ripped out above the door and
several seats (with passengers) ejected. Debris took out engines 3&4, though the pilots made a successful emergency landing. (all from Air crash investigations). Saying something can't happen is always dangerous! David |
