That is a good solution! And that brings me to the next idea: there should be a quick way to manually choose between different payload-models in the Load-aircraft-dialog.
This would make empty flights extremely easy and it would be of great advantage for those aircrafts that fly in different configurations.
The MAAM R4D DDay-edition is a good example, where you can stow away the paratrooper seats (you can actually SEE the seats fold back!!!) and thereby put the aircraft into cargo configuration.
Also, the naming problem would be reduced. You have a C-47 without a matching payload-model? Choose the next best (which is a DC-3). How about that?
