I'm telling you all right now, the VECC-VQPR leg is gonna be as much fun as the Lukla leg
I know you told me not to fly the legs ahead of
time, DBE, but I just had to see what VQPR is going to be like on approach in crappy wx conditions. I guess you can say I was "scouting"
the terrain
Luckily Paro has a VOR/DME, and if you don't fly the approach procedure as published(for RWY33, for example), you will
definitely find yourself buried deep within the side of a mountain. I took some screenies of the approach with the ATR 72 and will post
them later. What was more interesting was the tremendous winds experienced at FL190. Prior to reaching the initial descent phase, the
winds cranked up to 134 knots and stayed that way down to 16,000, which is the minumum safe altitude for RWY 33 approach procedure.
The winds were worse at altitudes above 190, so I did do my homework prior to making this flight
Anyway, this synopsis is intended to
forewarn of the impending dangers we all face in southeast Asia. Good luck!
