It's not necessary. Just use the default FS9 planner, or a free online planner such as http://rfinder.asalink.net/free/ and http://www.fsroute.com/
FS Navigator or FS Build are recommended because they give you more options in planning your route in detail.
FS Navigator has a free trial, so you can try it out for 20 sesions i think it was.
