I took a lady flying late one Friday night. It was quite uneventful until flying downwind for runway 19 at the local airport(where I use to live)
and the runway lights went out. I immediately said, "Oh sh--!" She then responded with, "What's wrong??" I told her that I had forgotten to
pick up something earlier in the evening.... as to not alarm her about the pitch black approach I was thinking about making My initial
thought was to fly over to another airport just 15nm from the home base, but I thought I could make the landing anyway. The airport
beacon was still functioning, and I knew it was located to the left of runway 19. No big deal. As I turned for the final approach, I was having
second thoughts again, but I continued on and made quite the roll-on of a landing. The landing light on the C172 wasn't all that bright, so I
had to make a final adjustment to the left before touching down. Just as I got the airplane back to the hangar, the freak'n runway lights
came back on for about 2 minutes and then turned off again. A bad sensor was obviously the culprit. Well, she was none the wiser about
what had happened with the lights. All of a sudden she asked if the runway lights were suppose to be on during the landing Anyway,
she was grateful to me for telling her a lie while we were on the downwind leg. She would not have been comfortable at all about the
landing had she been made aware of the lights situation. Anyway, I was given a post flight reward
