Question Re: Fixed Failure Setting

I have a question regarding the 'Fixed failures setting"

If you maintain your all your aircraft 100% , but have the "fixed failures setting" at 5%, do you still have a 5% chance of failure??

If that's right, it seems more realistic to not use the fixed failures, as your 100% aircraft should not fail. If your maintenance drops, just a
little to 95% then you've got 5% chance of something going wrong. what does anybody else think about this?


Also, Is there a minimum % that you can fly an aircraft? for example, if the maintenance is below 60% you HAVE to fix it before you can fly
it.???

I tend to disagree on this one. I would say that a good majority of smart aircraft owners keep their aircraft maintained at as close to 100%
as you can get, but those plans still have "failures". I like to have this small margin of failure, it keeps things interesting and possibly
more realistic. You can never account for the unknown or the random failure, such as bird strikes, bad gas, or sudden part failure. I think
keeping a plane maintained at 100% doesn't mean that the aircraft is perfect, just that it has undergone all the maintenance that it can
possibly undergo to keep it safe. Although 5% may seem a little bit high for real life, it sounds just fine to me for simming. I may have
some opposition on this topic, I'd like to hear input from some of the real life pilots or mechanics.

Events such as bird strike should be ever present. Ideally airport location would be a major factor in this, as bird strikes are most likely to
occur during take-off and landing, and you get more birds at coastal airfields (I understand this would be vey hard to program.).

I think failures need to be categorised, such as 'aircraft parts failure' and 'outside influence failure'.

aircraft parts should fail strictly according the maintenance figure of the aircraft. (bear in mind that an aircraft with 100% maintenance is
not at 100% the moment it takes off, and the longer the flight, the more the maintenance will drop by the time the aircraft lands. (Although
this is only a small amount)).

'outside influence failure' should refer to things like weather, birdstrike, etc, which we have no control over.

Maybe Dan has a different failure model to the one I've described. It wouldn't surprise me to have him come of and explain what FsP
actually does, and we'd all say 'Oh yeah, that's the best way of doing it' which is what seems to happen with most questions.

Either way, as Gibbmusic said, it would be good to get some real pilots and mechanics to comment on this (provided any are floating
around)

That's cool, I'd read through the manual this morning. It just made me want to use FsP even more than I did before

I think I'll probably have 5% fixed failure settings, but on easy, or easy-medium, as I wouldn't want to spend a ton of money keeping my
aircraft in tip top condition, only to be spanked with a serious failure that wasn't my fault.

I read the documentation front to back on Saturday, it doesn't answer this question exactly. I searched through the forums and I think that
this one may clear it up for us:

It seems that if you set fixed failures at 0%, then you can only experience user-initiated failures, such as flap and gear damage due to
exceeding deployment speeds. But that thread also mentions that you still have to maintain the aircraft....so best I can tell is that the fixed
failure setting only adds that % to the chance of failure???

I'm confusing myself now.

Dan, don't answer this, you need to concentrate on releasing FSP....then we won't have to ask stupid questions like this

well, im going to go with 2% with it set on hard and see how that goes, i had a retired pilot tell me that we have about a 98% chance of
getting there.
