I notice enroute from Salzburg to Dubrovnik, that I had a fuel leak on the left tanks. As the fuel level was dropping faster on the left tanks
than the right tanks, I declared an emergency (pan pan pan) as I was going to lose the left 2 engines on my VC10.
I managed to land at Dubrovnik just before the left tanks ran completely out of fuel.
After the flight, the report told me off for declaring a false emergency. I only declared a Pan because I had a leak from the left fuel tanks. I
know the left tanks did not run dry, but this was more down to luck than judgement as I managed to land just before the left fuel ran out.
Should I be penalised for noticting the fault. In the real world you would declare a Pan the moment you noticed the fuel leak, and not wait
until the engine shut down????????
