Making FSX use the IAS speed instead of Mach?

Hello all.

I previously had a thread

and I asked about why my aircraft kept going overspeed. It was because I was reading the diagrams wrong, and I should be paying attention to Mach
speeds and not the IAS strip that changes with altitude.

The thing is, I want the IAS to increase along with my altitude, example - When I increase in altitude, my Mach speed reflects what is on the IAS, so
if I am flying at .80 Mach, my IAS should be showing about 529.176674 knots, instead of 320 or so as it stands right now.

Using FSX? It won't. The only way you'll get the guages to move above the "preset speeds" is if you turn them over to displaying TAS.

Knots indicated airspeed (KIAS) has to decrease with altitude because there is less air passing through the pitot static system. That's
basic physics and has nothing to do with FS9 or FSX.

You are confusing KIAS with True Airspeed (TAS) or ground speed (TAS + wind vector) Comparing ground Speed and with IAS or mach is
comparing apples to little baby ducks.

Mach varies with temperature rather than speed and as temperature decreases with altitude this allows for high mach numbers at high
altitudes where IAS becomes essentially meaningless. Usually around FL200 aircraft will change from measuring IAS to mach as the
former decreases and the latter increases and the machmeter replaces the ASI.

IAS and mach are important to pilots, even FS pilots since the former determines how much lift you're getting and the latter determines if
mach shock will rip your aircraft to pieces. TAS is mostly useless for anything but pre-flight planning and your ground speed is only
relevant to your on-board tour guide.

Using rough, rule of thumb calculations an aircraft at FL370 showing 250 KIAS has a TAS of some 435 kts. The mach number will be
dependent on the current outside temperature at altitude and may vary even if the KIAS or TAS do not. 250 KIAS at sea level = 250 kts TAS.

Xfinisher...Leftcoaster's detailed explanation should get you on the right track as far as understanding the differences between IAS, TAS, GS,
Mach,etc. What you ask is definitely beyond the stress limits of the aircraft when referring to IAS. The Mach speed would be well beyond supersonic.
If you are looking for such speeds, why not do time acceleration within the sim?

Second, LeftCoaster- thanks so much. It makes much more sense to me now.

True Airspeed was probably what my setting was before. It would have had to have been. Your example at the bottom made it for me, and I thank you very
much. To whisky-zulu and Joeflyer- thanks for your replies as well. It has gotten me back on track to what my flight simulator experience has been for
the longest time since I upgraded my computer.
