Short answer, because the German word for "No" is "Nein" (SP??), so the phraseology we use is "Niner"...as to not confuse ATC

Yep, "nein" in German is pronounced the same way we say "nine".

Was there also something with "3" pronounced as tree because it could be misheard as free?

i was told its cause nine sounds likefive over a radio.
militery i think its 1 is one 2 is two 3 is three (or tree im not shure) 4 is fower 5 is fife 6 is six 7 is seven 8 is ate 9 is niner 0 is Zero ![]() |
