Hi everybody,
before every flight we always have a briefing about certain topics and always about fligth safety.
Often we share experiences. The purser told us her experience on a flight not so long ago:
It was a flight from Montreal to Amsterdam with a MD-11. During boarding her attention went to a passenger who looked a little bit
nervous. Let's call him passenger A. He looked like a person from the middle-east and he was talking Arabic on the phone.
He was a young guy in his early 20's.
She didn't pay any further attention to him, until later during boarding she noticed him again. He was constantly switching seats. As the
flight was not full (80 empty seats) passengers always must be seated on the seat that is mentioned on their boarding pass because of
weight and balance of the airplane.
She went to him and asked him to take his own seat. He said he was on his own seat now. After this conversation another passenger
contacted the purser and told her that his luggage (of passenger A) was in a luggage bin at the last row, while he was seated at row 15.
Again she confronted him with this and he confirmed. He went to get his luggage and put it in the bin above his own seat.
When this problem was solved, the same passenger contacted the purser about something else. He said, he saw that passenger A had
a friend on board, but this friend was seated somewhere else. Let's call him passenger B. He was in his early 20's as well and also
looked to be from the middle-east.
This is pretty strange as the flight had 80 empty seats, so why would 2 friends sit completely apart from each other? They obviously did
not check in at the same moment.
In the meanwhile also other colleagues were not really feeling comfortable around these 2 passengers.
A little bit later during boarding passenger A went to the toilet which was near the purser. When he left the toilet again, he went back to his
seat looking a bit nervous while passenger B was following him with his eyes. But they did not greet each other.
The crew wasn't comfortable, but they had nothing hard to refuse them on the flight.
Right before take-off the purser decided to contact the captain. She informed him about the situation and he understood. At this time he
saw no particular reason to delay the flight, but he would come back to her after take-off and he asked her to pay good attention to the
behaviour of the two passengers.
After take-off when the seatbelt sign was switched off, passenger A went to the toilet again and passed passenger B on his way. They
looked at each other, straight in the eyes, but did not say anything to each other, nor did they greet eachother.
More strange things happened during the flight and the crew did find their names on the passenger list.
In the cockpit the captain decided to contact the security department at Amsterdam Airport to give them the names and check if they are on
any kind of list.
The security department didn't have any information, but they again forwarded this request to the intelligence department in Holland.
After a while information returned to the captain. They confirmed that the two passengers bought their ticket one day before the flight.
Passenger A bought his ticket first. Passenger B bought his ticket 3 hours later.
At this time they decided that Airport police would be waiting for them at the airport.
Cabin crew started conversations with the two passengers to see if they could get more information. They 'acted' to just be interested in
the goal of their journey.
They told the crew that they were going on a holiday to Dubai and in the meanwhile would apply for a job at Emirates.
The rest of the flight went uneventful and at the moment of landing the purser was almost feeling guilty. As now, the 2 young guys looked
innocent and they actually had some laughs during the flight with them. She knew that airport police would be waiting for them.
During disembarkation she talked to them again. She started about the holiday again, and now he confirmed that after Dubai they would
continue to Irak.
Eventually the two passengers were arrested by airport police.
The crew started a debriefing about the situation and the captain received the final information:
The two young guys were on their way to a training camp for Al Qaida. They would become terrorists.
Anastasios.
