Is it possible to become a commercial pilot if you have C.P? If so, could any commercial pilot out there that reads this, contact me. I have
a 12 year old son with mild C.P. who is desperate to become a pilot. He uses the flight proffessional and submits flight plans etc to fly the
plane. He is fundamentally very intelligant. But, because he has C.P. he says he will never realise his dream. He is in normal main
stream school and doing well. He just needs to speak to, or to email a commercial pilot and to know that it can be done. So, anyone out
there that can help me cosnvince him that it is possible? Please contact me as a matter of urgency. Or, anyone working for a commercial
airline that knows it can/can't be done. Thanks very much.

I did a serch and it is mild Cerebral Palsy

I doubt that it would affect his medical certification in any way. The FAA doesn't test for that sort of thing. Just eyes, blood, drugs. That sort
of thing.

I have speech difficulties too sometimes but that doesn't slow me down. I just have to concentrate extra hard on talking clearly.

Although, if he is on any sort of medication for this then the FAA might not like that. Something to talk to them about.

No he isn't

If I were you, I'd check with your licensing agency directly. Ask to speak with a licencing medical officer and ask about your condition.
He/She should be able to tell you what restrictions would apply.

Cerebral Palsy is not something likely to be missed on the medical I'm afraid. Tell your son not to be discouraged. i don't know the specific
answer, but you should do two things: 1. Check out the AOPA website. They have much more information on the medical requirements, AND 2. Contact
AOPA by phone and ask for advice. They publish a training magazine, Flight Training, and each month they have experts answer questions just like these.

I sent a query to the AOPA about this and will let you know what I hear back.

I received a reply from Sandy Burns, of the Medical Certification Dept.of AOPA: here is her reply:

"An airman with cerebal palsy can hold a valid medical and many do, but certification depends on several things. Primary consideration is whether of
not there is loss of muscle tone/control and the severity, as relates to the airman's ability to perform the necessary duties of PIC. Another issue
will be medication usage. Many medications used for treatment of cerebral palsy are disallowed by the FAA. However, there are several allowed
medications used for the treatment of Parkinsons (similar symptoms) that airmen find work quite effectively for cerebral palsy. A complete
neurological workup would be one thing FAA would require."

She doesn't mention commercial specifically, but this should be encouraging.

Thanks that was posted 3yrs ago about me. mum and i have found a treatment called the scotson teqneuice and i can see alot of
changes in me

for PPL he can go for sure because there are the medical tests not so heavy , but for commercial pilot I'm almost 100% sure that they don't qualify him.
