Computer Speed (a bit OT)

As my computer (even though it has a 3 GHz Intel Pentium 4 HT) has been running quite (extremely) sluggish nowadays, I was wondering if anyone had any
tips besides the obvious for speeding up a computer. Just FYI, I'm running XP Pro SP2.

yes, AMD Athlon 64 3500+ or 3700+, I would really go 3700+ over the 3500+ just for the simple fact of an extra 512 KB L2 cache.

Only suckers run games on Intel, Intel isn't bad, but why use it when you have AMDs.

AMD is cheaper and runs cooler than any P4 Presscott core. was the other way during the XP days but now.... the A 64 chips are really good.

The question of the day is, how did it perform BEFORE adding 10000 add-ons? ONE faulty add-on, whether in use or not, can
DRASTICALLY slow the system down.

I have a laptop. Can't change my processer. God knows I want the Athlon 64 3200+

Do a scan for viruses, spyware, malware or something similar like that.

Also update drivers.

One thing I have found that I think I got from downloads.com is crap cleaner. Works quite well. Cookies and internet cache will be
cleaned.

I also use FS Autostart which stops any behind the scene programs the computer doesnt need.

Clean your registry, do a defrag? ( I don't know what you have been trying so far so i just mention it)

I believe there's a website out there (don't recall it off hand) that ONLY works on Windows tweaks! A google search would surely work for
you. Sorry I don't have it available.

I did quite a few of the tweaks, and WOW! My old system is running GREAT!

One of the "IT" guys at work showed me a program called diskeeper and I've been amazed at how much better, faster, smoother stuff
runs after using the program. From basic defrag's to boot defrags you can't go wrong. I bought the professional version but the home
version I am sure would be fine.

Good deal! Then it would be easy to uninstall and reinstall FS. See how it performs after that. If no marked difference, then you know
that it wasn't an add-on causing it.

Done it. Re-formatted it a fortnight ago.

Like I said earlier, I re-formatted my machine and re-installed XP a fortnight ago.
