Okay yeah that’s pretty easy. But that’s not the point of the thread.
Anyway doing a routine flight from Sydney (Aus / YSSY) to Auckland (NZ / NZAA) in my 747-400. Seemed to be bad weather in Sydney and getting closer to
NZ. Take off was pretty usual. Took a little more then normal requiring over 200kn just getting into the air. Started to lift off at 190 but a gust of
wind hit and pushed me back onto the runway. No Problem we took off and got on coarse fine.
Getting to about 300NM from NZ we start hitting a pretty big storm system. Wind was throwing the plane all over the place, was seeing sudden altitude
changes of up to 400FT and air speed changes of over 100kn (i know crazy) we'd be travelling at march 0.85 (about 299kn) then suddenly we're doing
march 0.92 or more. (~ 340 - 350) probably lucky the plane wasn't ripped apart. Then we see air speed changes going as low as 200KN back up to 300KN
again. Lots of lightning around as well. But anyway we continue on our flight plan.
We eventually get into NZ and on approach to runway 23L via ILS. Flying up downwind sitting on FL 031 currently travelling at 240kn with 1* flaps to
keep us under 250. So we start to turn to fly down base (i think i'm not too flash with these) to start lining up with the runway, i decide it's about
time to slow down to 220kn and get ready to final approach, so i set the AP to 220 and engines idle down and we start slowing down. At this point i
decide "Well, we're slowing down now lets hit another level of flaps to slow us down a little more" so I hit 5* flaps and they lock in.
So the flaps lock in then suddenly we hit a huge gust of wind, getting airspeeds of over 280KN. Bang there goes the flaps instantly no chance of
saving them. A few sware words later i decide "well... i don't mind a challenge. i'm only attempting to land a 747 at near full load without flaps".
So i decide to attempt the landing at 220kn rather then 185 which is what i usually do at a full load. We get everything lined up and i'm manually
flying the aircraft down keeping a nice 220kn with speed brakes armed and permission to land granted. I hit the gear leaver... nothing happens. More
swearing occurs, I start hitting the manual over ride for the gears and try and engage the gears a few times, nothing. So more swearing occurs, We
call up the tower and tell them missed approach and we hit the thrusters and start to raise up again. At this point the gear goes down. And yes... a
lot of swearing occurs.
We finally finish the go around and begin final approach flying a 220kn. trying my best to get her down quickly but softly, As we're getting closer to
the ground the end of the runway is coming up pretty quickly, we touch down about 1/2 down the runway and instantly hit the reverse thrusters and
breaks just slowing down in time to turn off the second last taxi way before the end of the runway.
After much swearing and breathing we pull into the gate and shut down. Hope you enjoyed my little story
my story telling skills is not that great
so i hope you guys followed it alright
