Altimeter penalty - suggestion

I just received a 250pts penalty for wrong altimeter setting upon landing
When receiving clearance to land I DID press B and altimeter changed to 29.97 (see I notice such stuff) and during landing roll and
subsequent taxiing ActiveSky started a weather update. While deboarding was halfway through I noticed the 'typical' screenflickering
when the update was completed and when I pressed B again the altimeter jumped to 30.03.

Shouldn't the altimeter penalty be triggered upon landing and NOT after that moment ???

BTW, can we only use American pressure system? where you set the pressure to the sea level pressure? or is it possible to use the
European system of setting the pressure to the pressure of the airport elevation so that altimeter reads zero? It's hard to complete a
STAR when you don't know which altitude you are at... Default ATIS doesn't give me the value of pressure at the a/p... which sucks.

Hmm, was not aware that Europe used QFE settings on their altimeters, always thought it was QNH! From what I understand QFE is obsolete in commercial
aviation and QNH is used! Your SIDS and STARS should use altitude above sea level for their charts!

Active sky has a setting for not doing updates under a certain altitude, default is 10000'. This should solve your problem with the penalty

Actually, I think that in former USSR we still use height above ground level. Besides, transition altitude is different for different airports as
shown on approach charts. What I am going to try is when I know field elevation, I will set the altimeter to read my current altitude minus
the field elevation. Would that work? If, say, elevation of Kyiv Boryspil airport is 420 feet (-ish) and I am at 1600 feet MSL, I will set the
altimeter to read 1180 and climb some. Correct?

Each 1 millibar in pressure = 30 feet. Therefore if your QFE (height above ground) is 1000 millibars and you are flying at 400 feet above ground your
altimeter setting should be 1013 (400/30=13.3)
