This is for people with programs like photoshop and PSP mainly that want to have their own virtual airline.
(this method is not for uploading to freeware sites but for your own usage)
What I do is find a freeware repaint someone has done that I really like, for instance for my MAAM DC-3 I needed a Polar Air Lines repaint.
Well it takes a long time unless you really know what you are doing, and even then it takes a while, to do one from scratch but if you want
something quick for your own enjoyment...
Get the freeware DXT texture conversion program from the world wide web. Use google to find it
Download the repaint you like from any number of sites. When you open the zip file save the texture.repaintname to your desktop to
find it easy. Save a copy of it also in your actual aircraft folder where the repaint is going. If you want the original repaint as is also edit the
aircraft.cfg file with the text notes that normally come with the file, lets say its texture.UAL for the MAAM DC-3 United Airlines repaint
Now I like the UAL repaint but it wont work for Polar Air Lines since it says United all over it.
Open the file on your desktop and see if its in a 32 bit .bmp format. If it is find the .bmp image that is of the fuselage. Open it with (in my
case PSP7) your editing program.
Now as I said I like the design of the UAL MAAM DC-3 repaint but dont want it to say United on it
I use the clone brush to "erase" the United from the fuselage trying to make sure I get the metal as even as possible. Then I pick the
lettering tool, click where I wantr the words Polar Air Lines to go place the lettering and in the box for the font tool I choose my font font size
keyring distance, etc, place the font on the fuselage then do the other side as well (might need to reverse and flip the lettering, easy
enough to do) then change the wording anywhere else on the fuselage that says United to Polar
Now I dont always use 32 bit textures as DXT3 textures are just slightly less clear but a lot more framerate friendly
Save your "repaint within but dont over write the original. Create a folder within called 32 bit or something you know is your repaint and
save in there. Do this to each part you repaint that way you have the original unmolested
Now open the DXT3 conversion program, open the folder with your repaint and save as DXT3 format overwriting your repaint.
Open your aircraft folder in FS9, find where the original repaint is and copy everything in the folder. Next save it as a new texture folder, in
my case its texture.polar paste all from the original into the new polar folder. now take the fuselage repaints you did and place them into
your new polar texture folder overwriting the originals
Open your aircraft.cfg and copy the repaint info for the United and paste it as the next repaint in line in the cfg.
Edit the words United out of the copy and replace with polar (in my case) or something like Toms Bush Service. Edit the tail number if you
changed it etc. Save the cfg
Open your sim. You should see your new repaint as a selection in the aircraft listing.
Granted this is kind of "stealing" someone elses hard work by only repainting the lettering, but in essence you like that persons work and
want to make it something more user friendly for your virtual airline for FSP. I dont think they would mind as long as you dont upload it to a
freeware website. I know as a repainted I wouldnt if you changed it to suite yourself as long as it isnt uploaded to like AvSim without
giving the original author the credit he/she is due. (might want to ask if they mind also)
Any questions post here. Please have some understanding of PSP and adding repaints to the sim and not wanting to know every step
from A to B . I will post a screenshot or two of my own when Im home later so you can see what I mean
