Hi, VATSIM is an online flying network. It provides very realistic ATC for pilots flying on the network but not all airports are manned and most
airports are only manned in the evenings. To begin flying on VATSIM you simply go to http://www.vatsim.net and register online with a proper ISP e-mail address and you will then be sent your VATSIM id and password to that e-mail address. Then you must download Squawkbox 3 from http://www.squawkbox.ca and install that onto your system. Also be sure to have a registered version of FSUIPC. I would reccommend you get someone already flying on VATSIM to give you a bit of mentoring if your're not already familiar with real ATC proecedures, flightplanning, SIDs/STARs etc. . Then, when your're ready, take your first flight where it's not too busy and make sure to note in your pilots comments when filing your flightplan that your're a newbie so as the controller knows to go easy on you. And also if you get stuck with anything or have any questions, ask the controller! And finally when flying try remember the following: 'First react, then readback', meaning that when told to reduce your speed or adjust your heading, then do so quickly before reading back so as you don't forget it. Hope this helps. Cheers, James

Hi James
Do you need some kind of microphone to use VATSIM? GA

No, you don't need a mic, you can do all comms with txt if you prefer.

There are certain ATC who opperate only on text, and some only on voice, and some opperating on both. Most ATC will have no
problem talking to you in text though.

If your're used to the dull, lifeless and pretty much inaccurate and dangerous default ATC then you'll thoroughly enjoy VATSIM as it provides the most realistic ATC available. Once you go VATSIM, you never go back!

Hi,
I'M a pilot and ATC on VATSIM, The Vatsim rules say that text communication is primary and voice are secondary way. But voice is more realistic. And many opinion is that voice is easier to use and i prefer that but when a ATC or a Pilot use Text its also ok.

Clement312,
Thank you for your interest in VATSIM. I think you will find that VATSIM brings an entirely new dimension to FS that you have never experienced before. The software is free and easy to install for Flight Sim and the ATC software, if you wish to pursue that path also, is very realistic and includes integrated voice, as does the pilot software. If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Richard Jenkins VATSIM President |
