Hey guys, It's been a while since I created a how too thread so here we go:
With every aircraft there is a file located within it's folder simply called " aircraft.cfg" So lets say you live in a mountain area and want to fly the default C172, but you
have to work long and hard to keep it a 80 knots and it takes like 15 minutes to get to 12,000 feet. Or lets say you don't fly larger aircraft but prefer general aviation
aircraft and you wish you could go farther on a tank of fuel. The aircraft cfg can fix all those issues with ease. Now lets say you own a Carenado B King Air 200 and
you love the look of the pop-up 2D GP400 GPS panel and would love to have one to replace the common GPS500 in your C172. That is not a problem either, you can
swap it out within the C172's panel cfg folder and there it is. Last... you wish you had a better texture for the C172 than the default versions. If you only knew how to
install a High Definition 2048 res livery. No problem. For me this is all part of the fun with FSX.
Lets start with the main aircraft cfg for the C172 and do some changing. Here are those changes. (Note that all changes are in red)
1) The first change I made was in the maximum weight :
[WEIGHT_AND_BALANCE]
max_gross_weight = 4000 // (pounds)
empty_weight = 1650 // (pounds)
The purpose is allowance to carry more fuel with a full load
2) Now in the Engine section I made 2 changes
[piston_engine]
power_scalar = 1.0 //Piston power scalar
cylinder_displacement= 90.0 //Cubic inches per cylinder
compression_ratio= 8.5 //Compression ratio
number_of_cylinders=8 //Number of cylinders
max_rated_rpm= 2700 //Max rated RPM
max_rated_hp= 350 //Max rated HP
You will get up to 12000 feet with no trouble now and you can fly at 140 knots up to 15,000 ft
3) Next I changed the amount of fuel the aircraft can carry without the need to change the dimensions of the fuel tank or the size of the aircraft.
[fuel]
LeftMain = -3.9, -2.1, 2.5,100.0, 0.0 //Longitudinal (feet), Lateral (feet), Vertical (feet), Usable(gallons), Unusable (gallons)
RightMain = -3.9, 2.1, 2.5, 100.0, 0.0 //Longitudinal (feet), Lateral (feet), Vertical (feet), Usable(gallons), Unusable (gallons)
Now you have 200 gallons of fuel, 100 in each tank. you can fly 4 times farther. I have tested these settings with FSP with no problems. You don't need full throttle to
take off anymore so you will have to feel out where to set the throttle and make sure you raise the flaps without over speed. You can also make adjustments in the
general description of the aircraft as well. Do not exceed 160 knots unless you first turn off damage detection in FSX or when using fs-passenger with the aircraft.
Okay, Now lets say you want to use a different GPS pop up when using the Shift+3 command. In this example I will replace the GPS500 with one of my payware aircraft
which is the Carenado B200 King Air. The Carenado defaults their GP400 automatically into the FSX main Gauges folder when you install it, so the only thing we need
to do is replace the cfg section within the panel folder of the C172.
The panel cfg folder will look like this :
[Window Titles]
Window00=Main Panel
Window01=Radio Stack
Window02=GPS
Window03=IFR Panel
Window04=Landing View
Window05=Mini Panel
Note: Window02=GPS is already there so all we need to do is locate the [Window02] section further down
[Window02]
size_mm=456,378
window_size=0.5
position=8
BACKGROUND_COLOR=0,0,0 This is the default GPS500 in FSX. It simply pulls the gauge out of the main gauges folder
VISIBLE=0
ident=GPS_PANEL
zorder=4
gauge00=fs9gps!gps_500, 0,0
The Carenado GP400 gauge located in the King Air B200 looks like this:
[Window01] Just change [Window01] to read [Window02] as it does in the C172 cfg above
Background_color=8,8,8
size_mm=524,378
visible=0
ident=10000
window_size= 0.310, 0.370
window_pos= 0.550, 0.160
no_luminous=1
zorder=7
gauge00=GPS530_3D_B200!GPS_530, 0,0,520,378
gauge01=B200KA!ToggleCAR530, 64,0,384,32
Now delete the original section [Window02] from the C172 panel folder and then Copy and paste the new one above in its place. Since the GP400 is also stored in the
main gauges folder, just like before just press Shift+3 and your new GPS panel will appear.
Before we attempt the last thing, adding a 2048 res HD texture to this aircraft, you must change the following in the main FSX cfg to take advantage of the textures.
To access the main FSX cfg you must make sure that windows is set to show all hidden files and folders and then do as follows:
Start / Computer / C: / Users / your mane or the computers name / AppData / Roaming / Microsoft / FSX
Inside the fsx folder there is a CFG file / open it/ under the section
[GRAPHICS]
TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=1024 ( change to 2048 or 4096 )
Save and exit
Now download the following HD texture for your C172 at:
https://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/5042/fsx-blue-and-white-cessna-172/
Follow the instructions. If you have any problems, reply to this thread and I will do my best to answer your questions
