direct route gets disoriented - 2RIP - 28-05-2006 I'm not sure if this problem is due to FSP or FS itself, but everytime i do flights that requires flying over Greenland(full of ice), the gps starts to show up white smoke(clouds/or snow) on the screen. Then the aircraft start to bank on an angle and fly in circles... this continues forever and i notice the heading will change by itself so my engaged autopilot will follow the orders to fly in circles Re: direct route gets disoriented - captain_crunch - 28-05-2006 Are you flying close to or over the north pole? Reason I ask is because I read somewhere that FS does not accurately model the shape of the earth. It uses a kind of cylindrical projection for it's coordinate system which means it can't properly handle latitudinal transitions when flying over the poles. This could easily explain why your GPS and autopilot goes crazy in this part of the world ![]() Re: direct route gets disoriented - poden - 28-05-2006 Well, it doesn't seem like it would be an FSP problem. You should at least fly that route without using FSP and see what happens (use time compression to get the test over with quickly).As far as what would cause the problem in FS, I don't know. Recently I did a test of FS flying at high latitudes, and the whole cylindrical projection problem didn't really pan out; the only odd thing about it is the scale distortion seen on the map at high latitudes. You can actually fly very close to the pole. Above 89 degrees, accessing the map will cause the display to kick out a non-fatal error saying it wants the latitude to be less than 89 degrees, but that's it. You can just close the map and resume flying. It seems that the cylindrical projection is only used in the display of mesh terrain, and the actual flight dynamics are modeled on a fairly accurate WGS-84 derived sphere. Its unclear why it would go batty over Greenland. Possibly (but not likely) the proximity to the North Magnetic pole? Sounds like another test is needed! Re: direct route gets disoriented - the_nick - 29-05-2006 recently I did a flight from heathrow , to somewhere in greenland and from there I went to Iceland, and I didn't had any problems with the GPS or any other navigation instruments. |
