Request for advice regarding CTDs - GDStaple - 28-11-2005

I was searching the forums and looking at the FAQs for a solution to the CTD issue, and I noticed some people have never resolved their
CTD issues. I have begun having the same problems with CTDs whenever I have been handed off to Ground after clearing the runway
that some other people have mentioned. I have gone thru all the recommendations I have located in the forums and here's my results:

1) Aerocore.dll - do not have on my system, nor have I ever
2) EditVoicePack - CTDs happen at the same instance with or without this addon
3) I have had this happen at 4 different airports with 3 different aircraft (all default MS aircraft w/ new textures) and two different seasons.
4) I do not understand why I would have the CTDs because of hardware acceleration in DirectX, I have never changed the settings and
the CTDs only began with the last version of FSP.
5) I have re-installed FS9 twice from the ground up and still have the CTDs.
6) I do not have these CTDs on non FSP filghts.
7) I do not have any addon scenery installed.

This is one of the best addons for simming I have ever seen, but I am getting tired of throwing away 2 hours at a time due to the CTD
issue. It wasn't until tonight that I have noticed a common thread in all the instanced of CTD, these are continuation of flights loaded from
the My Saved Flights option in FS9. I have not had a CTD when the flight is generated in the Create A Flight menu on FS9, only when the
flight is loaded from a saved flight. I like to save and pickup back up at the airport I landed at for a bit of added realism, so I usually start
from a previous save. I am unsure if this is the source of the problem of just a coincidence, butI am going to begin to only fly flights I build
from scratch, that is until a better option comes up. Any advise or recommendations would be most appreciated. I do know I had flown
over 300 hours in FS9 before FSP came out and have never had a CTD like this one. In fact, I can say I have had very few CTDs with FS9
since I purchased it, until now.

Thanks in advance for any help provided

Re: Request for advice regarding CTDs - DanSteph - 28-11-2005

can you post your log.txt ?

Directx acceleration if for sound not for graphic...
did you tried to upgrade your driver , what do you have for a card ?

Dan

Re: Request for advice regarding CTDs - GDStaple - 28-11-2005

I was referring to the Sound1 tab in the dxdiag application. Under the Sound1 tab it has a slider for audio hardware acceleration.
I have the Creative SB Live Series that came with my PC. I am currently updating the drivers for it, the most recent are from 2004.

Below is my log.txt from after the crash. I had not started up FS9 since the CTD.

Re: Request for advice regarding CTDs - SaVas - 28-11-2005

When it crashes to your desktop, you should get an error message which states normally what .dll file it was

Im going to take a stab at this and say its one of three:

fe.dll
g2d.dll
g3d.dll

Any of those the culprit?

Re: Request for advice regarding CTDs - GDStaple - 28-11-2005

The few times I have had the patience to wait for the dialog box to appear it was atc.dll that caused the problem. This CTD actually is a
crash to black screen, with the FSP mini-window remaining. It stays black for a while and then will crash back to the desktop with the MS
Send Report dialog box. The only times I have this happen is just after I clear the runway and tell FS to change my COM frequency to
ground's frequency.

Re: Request for advice regarding CTDs - SaVas - 28-11-2005

Hmm, Do you have latest version of FSP?

if you get the black screen try this:

do ctrl + shift + V to close the mini report

Alt tab to another window then alt tab back to the sim.

As for CTD it sounds like something is corrupt with a file maybe used with EditVP

EDIT: I read about the saved flight problems...best thing is do like I do as saved flights seem to be buggier than they are worth.

Write down on a notepad your last airport you landed at and just create a flight
or enter the sim and go into FSP Manager and look at your last flight and write down the airport code and create a flight afterwards.

if you land at different places with different aircraft the notepad works really good and you suffer a lot less CTDs

Re: Request for advice regarding CTDs - Dutch64 - 28-11-2005

atc.dll crashes are the worst in fact. Worst because they are very hard to solve. Most common reasons for this kind of crash are double or wrong afcad
files, too heavy load of ai traffic, certain addon scenery etc.
Do you use fs9 or fs9.1 (ie, with the patch)?

I had often these crashes till i updated to 9.1 After that it happened one more time which turned out to be a double afcad file.
But again, it's a weird and annoying type of crash.

Maybe you can do a search at avsim for atc.dll and see all the results coming up.... Driving many people completely nutsSmile

Re: Request for advice regarding CTDs - SaVas - 28-11-2005

dll crashes are a pain. Luckily I was having only g2d.dll and g3d.dll and did a search on google. Found a forum where someone who
was having no issues created a download of both their g2d and g3d files and viola, Ive had no crashes since.

The more we add to the sim the more complex it gets and the more prone to errors.

Re: Request for advice regarding CTDs - GDStaple - 29-11-2005

Thanks to Dan, SaVas and Dutch for the help.

@SaVas: I have decided that the saves are more trouble than they are worth and hopefully that will fix the problem. I had this same
CTDs both with EditVP and on a clean install of FS9 (updated to 9.1) without EditVP. As for tabbing out to another application, I have
trouble just getting the PC to open up Task Manager so I can kill FS9. What ever is causing the crash, it's really taxing my system. I also
have the latest version of FSP. I will try closing the mini-report the next time it comes up.

@Dutch: I do not have any addon scenery nor do I have any afcad files on my FS9. Thanks for the tip on checking Avsim, I'll take a look
there later tonight.

Thanks again,
Garrick

May or may not be related but I was having problems and was having a devil of a time trying to track the culprit. Finally found this:

Disregard the "ATI" bit as this can occur with any set-up.

Re: Request for advice regarding CTDs - GDStaple - 06-12-2005

Just posting an update to my CTD problems. I didn't need to update my audio drivers, but I updated my video card drivers and
motherboard BIOS, and I have changed to only using a saved flight for startup very sparingly. This appears to have solved my CTDs. I
have made several flights and I am very happy to report so far so good, no crashes. Thanks to everyone who offered advice, I think I used
a little from everyone in getting this solved. I am not sure what exactly fixed the problem, but for anyone having the CTD when getting
cleared to ground I hope this helps.

Thanks again,
Garrick

I didn't update any drivers. I just start each and every flight from the "create a flight" screen and I haven't seen a CTD since.
Thanks Garrick for this post. Beer And thanks to everyone else that took the time to post an idea. I SO Love FSPASSENGERS now that
I don't get CTDs. Applause Actually, I loved it when I was getting CTDs.
Ben.

Re: Request for advice regarding CTDs - GDStaple - 11-12-2005

I posted too soon. I pressed my luck in loading a saved flight and got bit in the ass. I had just landed at Narita and after I responded to
the handoff to Ground, everything went black except for the mini-report. Thus, I am completely stumped as to what is the real root of the
problem. I know I have seen several people with the same problem, perhaps there's a common thread in hardware or something. Just
in case anyone is interested here's my specs:

2.6 GHz P4 (Dell Dimension 8300)
512MB RAM
128MG ATI Radeon 9800
SB Live sound card

I believe everyone when they say the saved flights are buggy, however I never had a problem with any crashes like this in FS9. I am going
to completely stop using the saved flights, but I just don't understand why this was not a problem earlier (pre-FSP).

Re: Request for advice regarding CTDs - olseric - 12-12-2005

What's your swap file size?

SETTINGS->CONTROL PANEL->SYSTEM->ADVANCED->PERFORMANCE OPTIONS

Go to the Virtual Memory section and change it to an inital size of 1024MB and a max size of 1024MB.

Reboot and retry. Let us know if it works.

Re: Request for advice regarding CTDs - GDStaple - 14-12-2005

Eric, thanks for the suggestion. I had not thought of adjusting the swap file size, but I am willing to try almost anything. My current
settings are min of 768MB and a max of 1536MB. The next time I have a series of shorter flights I'll make this change and report back in.
It may be a few days before I can get back on here and report, but I'll be sure to post and update when I can.
