Semi OT: Why are thrust reversers so bad to use at low speeds? - Fritz Bayerlein - 03-09-2005 I'm sure SWAFO can help me out on this. Why is it such a bad thing to use thrust reversers at low speeds? How is that bad on the engines? Aside from the noise pollution and the discomfort to the passengers and those in the terminal, what's the mechanical reasoning? I'm in the army and I fly on C-17s occasionally. One feature of this plane is that it can back up using its thrust reversers at up to a 2° banking. I've been on these planes when they were backing off a tarmac and it was awesome! Anyway... the engines on the C-17 are the same PW engines on a 757. How can it be acceptable and standard practice for a C-17 to use its thrust reversers but not a commercial airliner? Thanks. I've stated that use at low speeds is not usually bad at all. |
