Overspeed annunciator response time / threshold - Spectre230 - 12-06-2011 Is there a fixed alloted time to respond to an overspeed alarm without getting penalized? I know the idea is to avoid the overspeed in the first place and I have adjusted my flying practices accordingly but some things just can't be avoided. Case in point: Today I was doing an East>West flight in northern USA (KSDF to KSMO) in my CRJ700 with planned cruise altitude of FL35. I set climbing cruise to 0.62 mach above FL20 climging to FL35 on A/P. Upon crossing FL29 the airspeed indicator suddenly jumped to .88 mach (Vmo for the CRJ700 is 335 KIAS / .85 mach). Within 3 beeps of the overspeed alarm I killed the AP, dumped the throttles and put out spoilers. Evidently I popped up into the (imaginary) jet stream 8o. On instant replay I could see that I suddenly encountered an 80 Kt headwind. I've learned to be wary of the increased airspeed during pitch over / leveling at cruise altitude and usually set a climbing cruise of Vmo -25 then slowly increase to Vmo once things have settled. I can certainly take my medicine (penalties) when I've done something stupid...which is pretty common ![]() ![]() Re: Overspeed annunciator response time / threshold - Joeflyer - 12-06-2011 Seems to me you don't have a module called FSUIPC that takes care of sudden wind shifts like that. Believe me, it's worth every penny. I've not had overspeeds in cruise for several years now due to the wind smoothing capability of FSUIPC. To beg Dan to do something about the over speed penalty is pointless really. Once you hit the Vmo, your goose is cooked ![]() Re: Overspeed annunciator response time / threshold - Spectre230 - 13-06-2011 Well.......that makes perfect sense to me ![]() ![]() Re: Overspeed annunciator response time / threshold - Spectre230 - 13-06-2011 It's a shame really. Annunciators are there to warn you of an immenent problem (albeit, sometimes sudden and not of your making). IMHO, there should be some sort of bonus for rapidly identifying and rectifying a problem before catastrophe. Re: Overspeed annunciator response time / threshold - gbapache - 13-06-2011 You can get the latest version of FSUIPC from any of the freeware sites. Frankly I'm surprised that you have been able to fly without it. Re: Overspeed annunciator response time / threshold - Spectre230 - 13-06-2011 Hence the name of my pilot "Charlie Sheen III" . I've lost him to a couple of overspeed implosions / explosions / deplosions. I haven't resurected him though.....just started from scratch as a student (Charlie is into pain) ![]() He has grown wiser (and more jaundiced) and now flies with a finger poised over the Esc key! Re: Overspeed annunciator response time / threshold - Joeflyer - 13-06-2011 Google FSUIPC or Pete Dowson...it'll give you the info. you need on how to obtain it ![]() Re: Overspeed annunciator response time / threshold - Ulic - 15-06-2011 Then again, why cruise at Vmo? Are you in such a hurry? If you fly so close to the maximum speed you take a risk of overspeeds. He indicated that Vmo is .85 but did not say that he flew the aircraft at Vmo...instead, the sudden windshift brought the airspeed quickly past Vmo....quite typical without a wind smoothing application. Re: Overspeed annunciator response time / threshold - Ulic - 15-06-2011 See the latter part of his post Joe: "usually set a climbing cruise of Vmo -25 then slowly increase to Vmo once things have settled." Re: Overspeed annunciator response time / threshold - drgullen - 19-06-2011 Spectre, If you don't have a paid, registerd copy of FSUIPC.dll then you won't be able to control this because the wind smoothing option is only available if you have paid Pete Dowson for that module. The easiest workaround is to just disable the overspeed warning in FSP. Sure, it makes the experience a bit less realistic, but at least you won't get dinged for this penalty when you really didn't do anything wrong. Re: Overspeed annunciator response time / threshold - cyclobs - 13-07-2011 after my little adventure last night (see my "how to loose.." thread) i'm certinally going to be getting this bit of software Re: Overspeed annunciator response time / threshold - gbapache - 13-07-2011 You could also buy a weather engine. I use Active sky 6. Re: Overspeed annunciator response time / threshold - cyclobs - 14-07-2011 sadly they are a little more expensive then i'm willing to pay |
