Crash landing speed? - Hurricane - 20-05-2009 I was approaching LOWW in my Beech King Air when the gear failed to come out properly. There was severe turbulence (one of the worst cases I have seen so far), so the plane was flapping up and down like crazy and I had to compensate for heavy gusts. Passengers were at over 30% anxiety even before the failure.Still I managed to get the plane properly over the runway and let it drift down, at the same time trying to compensate for the turbulence that was as bad 1 meter from the ground as it was at 1000 ft. Then I cut the fuel and the ignition and I touched down with 87 kts (7 kts over stall speed to be sure to have control all the way despite the turbulence and the gusts) and 52 ft/min descent speed (and given the circumstances I was realy, really, REALLY proud of that!). Now this would normally easily qualify for "kiss", but still the plane crashed and I had a few fatalities on board (and the plane was wrecked). My question is, what downward speed is allowed for the plane not to crash and break up, but to slide? Re: Crash landing speed? - SkyAirWorld - 20-05-2009 I wouldnt say it was the speed. I would have been your touchdown. Would have been exceeding that limit. (FPM) Re: Crash landing speed? - Hurricane - 20-05-2009 That was 52 FPM. That's what I was proud of. If it has to be less that is really hard. Re: Crash landing speed? - gbapache - 20-05-2009 Let's not forget about the randomness of some failures. Your "crash" may have been predetermined by the program. Thus the good fighter is able to secure himself against defeat, but cannot make certain of defeating the enemy----Sun Tzu Re: Crash landing speed? - whiskey-zulu - 20-05-2009 Did you not have enough fuel to perform a missed approach and attempt to get the gear down and locked properly? Sometimes and hard touch and go can be enough to lock the gear. Re: Crash landing speed? - Anastasios - 20-05-2009 With a belly landing isn't it important to have the plane levelled instead of a flare when you toch? You say you were close to stall speed so you nose must have been up quite some degrees. Anastasios. Re: Crash landing speed? - Hurricane - 26-05-2009 With full flaps the plane stays pretty much level, although of course it will tilt backwards a bit. Maybe it's that, although I have belly landed a DC3 at stall speed succesfully before. At that occasion my descent rate was between 30 and 40 FPM. I fear the limit might be set at 50 FPM, meaning I missed it by just 2 FPM ![]() |
