landing gear failure - graaf - 01-10-2006 What should i do if i have landing gear failure? Belly landing on land or on water, or smothing else. Water is not as soft as it appears, and those that survive the impact may possibly drown. Also, try to make it to a runway because not only is it a straight, flat and onobstructed piece of land, there is also help nearby in the form of fireman and medical units. Obviously you want the lowest vertical speed possible, but it's vital also to keep the forward speed low, so you have to use flaps. I'm not sure about flaring, but I think it is preferable to touch the ground with the entire belly, and flare too much since that will make the tail impact the ground too hard which might break the aircraft. Normally, you want to land as light as possible so dump most of the fuel if you can. You can't dump the passengers though because they will get rather upset by this ![]() Allard. Re: landing gear failure - opherben - 02-10-2006 Follow a logical approach for real or simulated flight, example: * Determine which landing gear, main or nose and decide where to land. For nose you chose a long runway with headwind as strong as possible to reduce ground speed to minimum at nose lowering. For main choose strong wind from that side, to keep that wing raised as long as possible on rollout. * Configure the aircraft: get rid of fuel to a minimum, at least in the affected wing to make it lighter and reduce fire hazard. Set up a favorable longitudinal (aft)/ lateral center of gravity. * Coordinate intentions and have a runway set up with foam, net or whatever can be made available, emergency aid, and brief the crew. * Determine the cause of the problem and the ability to extend the gear using emergency gear extension systems and methods. Do not recycle damaged gear, just extend it once when fuel remains for about 30-45 minutes to solve extension problems. Re: landing gear failure - Joshuah A. Wetzel - 02-10-2006 Just to contribute another piece of information to this thread, I don't think FSPassengers will count an emergency water landing a landing, but instead a crash. I am not 100% positive, though. Please correct me if I am wrong.
