Whoops.... I Did It Again.... - SkyAirWorld - 25-11-2008 Recently was helping a mate out with his airline mining charters He has 2 Banderantie aircraft... We just left YPAD-YOLD Re-loaded... YOLD-YPAD and.... as we taxi, the taxi way cones were dead on the lines rather than the "5 pace rule" and... well now...right prop is "in heaven" now... Luckily it was at feather so I'm hoping havent destroyed the whole engine Certinally brings me back to my prop days... did the same thing in a PA31 years ago... Whoops.... (sorry not allowed to share the photos) Re: Whoops.... I Did It Again.... - Joeflyer - 25-11-2008 We use to require one of the cones be placed in front of the C208(at around 20 ft.), but after several prop strikes and expensive repairs later, we nixed the idea of having a safety cone anywhere near a prop. Now we just have them situated at each wing tip, tail and 2 at the cargo door(for GSE and vehicle positioning). Unfortunately we all go through living and learning from those type of situations. Re: Whoops.... I Did It Again.... - SkyAirWorld - 25-11-2008 Glad I didnt do it in a jet.... :s Gosh... That'd be all we need right now... Re: Whoops.... I Did It Again.... - DBE - 25-11-2008 Vital question: how is the cone doing? ![]() Re: Whoops.... I Did It Again.... - Tracker801 - 25-11-2008 I figure it was one of the non-listed casualties of war.............. Re: Whoops.... I Did It Again.... - KenG - 25-11-2008 Most of the time when they insist on placing cones around the airplane is when I am in Europe. I never got that, what they are going to miss the 14' tall King Air but see the 1.5' tall cone? As part of the walk around I will pick up all of the offending cones and stack them behind the airplane. We had one pilot suck up a red carpet into the propeller at Hooks with a B300 and since then I will not allow anything, carpet or cone alike to be near the airplane when we start and taxi out. Yes the carpet was behind the wing, but since we start with the propellers feathered for some reason the carpet got picked up and went forward toward the propeller as opposed to getting blown backward. The pilot also started with the vanes out which Beech says will cause air to get sucked from the back of the wing toward the ice vane doors. If it did not happen to someone else I would have never considered a carpet behind the wing to be a problem. Re: Whoops.... I Did It Again.... - SkyAirWorld - 26-11-2008 That was the problem it wasnt around the plane... It was actually there to mark the taxi way... The whole airport is un-surfaced, and to mark the taxi way there are a set of cones lined along to make the taxi way to the RWY And I'm very sorry to report..... the cone didnt survive... we did all we could.... which included throwing the cone as far away from the plane in anger after it happened... then bursting out laughing... Re: Whoops.... I Did It Again.... - AeroJim - 26-11-2008 good stories from every1 here, especially about the carpet. Re: Whoops.... I Did It Again.... - SkyAirWorld - 26-11-2008 ![]() ![]() Note to Matt.... Discontinue Carpets.... Re: Whoops.... I Did It Again.... - Jason - 26-11-2008 You really do see some crazy stuff working around A/C. We had a C-130 with an engine problem (not sure what it was) and I was on headset at the nose. There were 3 engine troops working the issue, 2 in the flight deck running engines and one (the poor soul) searching for or fixing the problem. Well this poor kid... We had to roll a stand up to the wing to within about a foot of the propeller, chain it down with mooring chains, and get the engines started. Then this poor airman had to climb the stand on headset, pop a panel and being working the problem, his left arm wasn't but a few inches from the prop with the engines running. It's the nuttiest thing I ever saw as a crew chief, even over watching a C-130 come back from an airshow, lower gear, and have the left side struts seperate causing the left main gear to turn 90* toward the ground and just hang there with the tires perpendicular (horizontal) to the ground. BTW that A/C landed safely despite a TON of sparks and grinding. The only real damage was the gear (obviously) and the gear door, some panels, and some of the radar and antenna thingies under the A/C. Re: Whoops.... I Did It Again.... - KenG - 27-11-2008 I guess that I am glade that I don't fly down under. Cones on the taxiway, that is just asking for a prop to kiss 'em. Re: Whoops.... I Did It Again.... - SkyAirWorld - 27-11-2008 hahaha Yeah not the best Idea but... usually on the unsealed taxiways there is a distance between the cone abd where the actual line is... Clearly someone didnt get the memo... OH well lesson learnt ![]() Re: Whoops.... I Did It Again.... - Willtim - 21-12-2008 Ouch Re: Whoops....
