Hard Landing - Becks - 12-05-2006

I was watching videos of different sorts of landings and I stumbled onto this one.

http://www.flightlevel350.com/video_streaming.php?id=5961

I think the pilot lost several hundred points for landing hard lol. Notice how fast he is coming in for the landing. I also noticed the runway
looked cracked all over the runway once the plane slowed down enough to see detail. Is this common on all runways? Who monitors
the conditions of the runway at an airport? Is it the local government? or is there some sort of international authority that inspects safety
conditions at airports?

At the airport where I live it`s just the firemen who inspects the runway. But the airport is VERY small and with one runway at about 2 km
it`s not so much to do...

A nice video, the landing however was awfaul..!

I loved the comment the flight attendant made after the landing lol.

Re: Hard Landing - BriT - 15-05-2006

Oh yeh saw this video before. This is what the pilot said from a person at BAV who knows the captain.

I've spoken to the PIC on that flight, and heres the story.

The winds where E-SE about 10kts, gusting towards 20kts if he recalls correctly, and as its an Airbus, the aircraft automaticaly maintains
a speed regardinjg the wx inputed into the MCDU.

The autothrottle didn't like the conditions at the time and was struggeling to maintain speed, on "RETARD", the wind dropped off quite a
bit, whiched caused the heavy landing and bounce.

Unfortunatly Virgin's SOPs don't allowed the dis-connecting or manual override of the speed control, unless told 160kts to 4, otherwise its
down to the automatics.

Regarding the rollout, the number 1 thrust reverser on G-VSSH was inop, so only 2 and 3 where avalible and with autobrake LOW, ment
a rollout to Taxiway T, which is a 90 degree turn, not like LHR's RET's. So the aircraft had to slow down to 7-10kts to take the corner, the
600 series of the A340 are very long, so you have to do these turns at low speed, to prevent loosing any wheels to gods green earth,
which on a runway, isn't normally a good end to the days flying!

Thanks for the information. I'm always interested as to 'what went wrong' in the hard landing videos I see.

Re: Hard Landing - Captain_Smith - 04-06-2006

Ouch, hard landing eh? lol I just wish we could'a seen it from the RWY Side or summat! It would be excellent except for the huge chunks
of tire being thrown in every direction Smile
