what the... my IAS went blank... - Nasder - 05-01-2006

Okay, I don't know what this is, I've had it since I installed the Flight 1 ATR 72-500 and started it in dark and cold, but I can not say that the
plane is to blame. The other thing in common is that I always run Active Sky, but once the problem occurs, shutting down AvS doesn't solve it either,
I haven't tried flying without AvS though from start (where's the fun in flying without AvS?)

But my IAS goes blank at times, mostly when I fly the default cessna or my lago F-16... But often comes back on after 10-15 minutes (or I get pissed and ends the flight)

Today it went blank when I was flying my PMDG 737-600 forcing me to fly the entire flight without auto throttle (due to a PMDG bug/feature) and no IAS speed (but I have my mach number). It was a pain flying and landing without knowing your IAS, I landed but got a penalty when I engaged my reversers, I landed at 60knots! (my FsP report said 0
knots).

Have any other one here had this problem with your IAS going blank, I got true airspeed and ground speed, but no IAS. It's like the formula exporting
the IAS is messed up and stops function at random. I can't recreate it (if I could, I would know the cause and avoid it or try to fix it).

PS, this happened with the two latest FSUIPC's... Haven't tried any earlier because I don't have any earlier to try with.

And please don't tell me reinstalling FS9 is the only thing that works, if it is I'll do it, but if there's any other way I'm glad to do it.

I have the same problem but for some reason, as soon as I put the pitot heat on, my IAS comes back! Try it, it might work for you too!

Oh... That might be it!

I need to try that, I thought my plane would complain if it was icing or such, I'm gonna try it out.

ASV6 With FSUIPC 3.52 or 3.53 using the constant route temperature and constant route pressure address the issue. It goes all the way back to the
beginning of FS9 and was just addressed within the past two weeks Smile You probably need registered FSUIPC but you should have that anyway Wink
Thank goodness for ASV and FSUIPC...

Just my luck...

when I really want to recreate it to try the pitot heat, it doesn't happen

Re: what the... my IAS went blank... - eazy - 05-01-2006

Just to add that I have the same problem. With any aircraft. Had this already with ASVe.
Most of the times the ASI recovers very soon, sometimes it doesn't.

But where's the pitot heat in the ATR ??? WonderWink

That was it, thanks alot!

When the pitot heat is turned off, my IAS goes to zero, when I turn it on, it takes like 10 seconds and it's on again. I turn them off, and the IAS
goes to zero. And then I put them on, and wham, yes... My C-130 cargo is filled with sheep! No... I mean my IAS comes back...

I uses the CS C-130 to test this (this bird almost always loses the IAS for me)

As for the ATR, I would guess it's close to the anti ice things. Look around close there Smile

Re: what the... my IAS went blank... - eazy - 05-01-2006

Thanks for the pitot thing. Will try that.
"Good catch", as Fs2Crew would say Wink

Re: what the... my IAS went blank... - SweJets - 05-01-2006

If i´m not completly wrong, the pitot is what reads the IAS and if you don´t have pitot heat on it sometimes will freeze and therefore not
show any IAS. That´s my suggestion to the problem.

Re: what the... my IAS went blank... - Ryanamur - 05-01-2006

That's partly right (the airspeed indicator ASI is what reads the airspeed). The pitot tube is a small tube that petrudes from the aircraft (wing or fuselage). It's used to get two types of pressures: dynamic and static. These pressures are used to feed a variety of instruments including the Altimeter, the ASI, the VSI and a few others. Because the tude catches ram air, it's prone to icing and because it is so small, it's usually the first thing to ice up... meaning that when you pitot tube starts to ice up, you know that you have icing forming on your aircraft.

Guess I forgot to put my Wink on my post above. Smile Smile Smile

taking from wat Ryanamur said i was wondering what does the pitot heat do and how does it effect fs?

Re: what the... my IAS went blank... - SaVas - 05-01-2006

Im going to take a stab at this and say those with freezing IAS also have Active Sky, or a weather engine that represents icing.

This is a feature of some addons with their own weather engines.

Default keys are Shift + H to turn the pitot on. recommended where its extremely cold at low altitudes or when flying at high altitudes.

NOW...some aircraft even with pitot on will not function properly (Aerosoft Beech D18 being one of them) so in the Active Sky set up, you
can turn off icing simulation which should correct the problem.

I also recommend using the Shift + H instead of flipping the pitot switch as some switches may not function with addon aircraft and
addon weather engines.

Re: what the... my IAS went blank... - Nasder - 05-01-2006

It caught me off guard because it has never happened to me before, I have flown in similar conditions without this, it started happening so fast and
never gave me a warning or anything so I thought it was a bug.

So AvSE 6 + new FSUIPC = pitot freeze. I knew it could cause freezing, but I guess I was waiting for something flashing going "warning!" But now I
know much better Smile

That's FS for you it as two settings: working and not working.

In a real aircraft, you get a slow transition. Not an instant Emeril "BAM".

As for what the pitot heat does, it warms up your pitot tude, prevents ice from forming and melts icing around the pitot tube. This allow the
constant flow of air and static pressure to make it to the appropriate instruments.

In FS it simply prevents your Static and Dynamic Pressure instruments from failing! Smile
