VATSIM - ivo - 26-12-2005
I was wondering how VATSIM works? What do you need for it, and is it worth signing up for it??

You don't need much for it but when i fly on IVAO i prefer to use a headset. I think on the vatsim pages you will find lots of info. It has pros and
cons. Pros are you're talking with real ppl with proper procedures etc. Cons can be you're a bit limited like no time acceleration, no pausing etc..
I think you really need to decide for yourself whether you like it or not
I think on VATSIM you can also log in as an Observer and just listen to other ppl flying and controlling, you will get an idea then how it goes and if
you like it

its it true (just what ive read) that Vatsim have mostly America area controllers, and IVAO is more aimed at europe?
i once went on Vatsim, was still sat at my gate - pressed something and got told off

Yes, i think VATSIM is more focused on USA and IVAO for Europe and south America.
Mistakes ppl sometimes make is that they start their sim with the plane at the active during an online session. It's not nice when you're on final and
suddenly a ghostplane appears out of nowhere a few hundred feet in front of you

yeah i read not to start on the active, so made sure i started at the gate. i pressed something to speak to a controller i thought
think one of the things your meant to put on your notes is '1st vatsim flight' or 'newbie' or something, so they go a little easier on you

VATSIM is extremly friendly to newbies, as long as you put "Newbie" or "New Member" they will be sure to give you extra help.

It appears that way, but it isn't such. IVAO has an active US division, but we're a bit short on controllers (always teaching new people
though). VATSIM likewise has active divisions in Europe.
More or less a matter of personal preference...and software preference.

You're right but what i meant is when you take a look at the active pilots/controllers on both organizations, VATSIM has the highest density in US and
IVAO Europe. I know also ppl who fly with both, so depending on where they want to fly they just choose one for the day

es!!!!!!!! I finally got it to work!!!!! I tuned the frequency to ask for a clearerance, but nobody was talking so I pressed scroll lock, and said
hello. Then he replied with, say again please, I got embarrased cuz I didn't know what to say, so I exited immedietly.

Hmmm.... I have another problem. My problem is that I don't know where to find what frequency I have to switch to. Only once, it displayed
it in green on the squakbox, but the other times it doesn't say anything. Can you please help me??

Go to their training website. They should have a tutorial walkthrough.

it says that if there are controllers in my area, they will show....
I thought there were controllers everywhere.
