Is icing modeled in fs9? - alphaone - 03-12-2005

Since it is winter now and its getting colder and snowy out I'd like to be sure of this. I was never really sure if icing was in fs9 or not. So...
is it?

Icing effects are modelled in fs2004 but only with highest realism settings and under certain conditions. It's not visually modelled though

It messes big time with certain instruments at really gold weather.

Icing is modelled using Active Sky V - enhanced

I don't even get icing in real life. I live way down south in Austin where it has snowed thrice in my lifetime and it will be 87 degrees F today, on
3 December.

Your pitot tube will freeze in the right conditions if you don't turn on the heater. And that's mostly it.
On the other hand there are payware addons, like F1 ATR where the icing probe will show ice on it in the right conditions if you negelected
the procedures. (Only in th 2D unfortunately)
I'm sure there are other examples like it (some are freeware), but don't know which ones.

Icing is NEGLECTED (to say the least) in FS9. No visual clues, no severe icing encounters, etc. This is one area were FS lags!

Re: Is icing modeled in fs9? - olseric - 04-12-2005

I had a pilot online once that was saying he was losing speed rapidly as he was descending clean. I checked out the AIRMETs for that
area and sure enough, icing present. I told him about it and suggested he turn on the deicing equipment. That did the trick.

So, I think it is modeled, but I think it's rare to find it.

try flying without the pitot heat on - your instuments will go wonky as the pitot ices up.

Re: Is icing modeled in fs9? - jboweruk - 04-12-2005

I've had the props ice up on a Baron before. It happened over Greenland; one minute flying along nice then couldn't maintain speed. At
that point I looked at the temp and switched on the heaters for the props and wings. Then suddenly prop RPM picked up and she flew
righ t again. So in answer I would say yes icing is modelled; to Brad I'd say that was severe mate? A stalling aircraft is in my book pretty
severe when you can't do anything about it...... Smile

Very true, however where are the OTHER effects of icing? I don't have to run my engines up when at low engine speeds in FS9! I don't
have to keep the flaps extended when taxiing to the gate in icing conditions! C'mon now Wink!!!
