do you have this problem? - aibiria - 04-08-2005

Hi there guys!!

I was just wondering about something. Every time I am doing my flight plan i've got exactly the same problem. What is the active runway
for the destination airport? I mean. How do you guys do it? Unfortunately fs doesn't give you an idea of the runway in use (only in IFR and
short time after the beginning of descent). Do you have any payware program for that? Do you have any clues?
In real life, pilots know exactly what runway is in use before they get clerance. Isn't that correct?

Your comment would be really appreciate. Thanks all

Not sure what method pilots employ in real life....but I do know active runways change with the current reported winds at the destination
airport. So, it really depends.

If you're flight will only last one hour go ahead, get the METAR and if winds are 330 at 8kts at KSEA you can bet that runways 34L/R are
going to be in use. It's all about flight planning. Before I even start FS I go check the METARs, look at airport diagrams, SID/STARS, ILS
procedures, and then build my flight plan on paper.

It's trickier if you go on a longer flight because in a few hours the weather could be completely different.....if that's the case, try taking a
look at the forecasts on weather.com and try to predict which way winds will be blowing in X hours.

If your on initial approach and find that the runway you planned for is no longer being used then you've got to adjust on the fly (no pun
intended LOL) , make the changes in the FMC and try not to panic. LOL

Hope that helps a little.

Chuck

A method for short flights or if you use a preset meteo in flightsim:

Before building your plan (then off course before starting FSPassenger flight), simply use the Go to airport to jump at your destination, Get the ATIS
and ask for a take off clearance, write down the runway assigned and go back to your departure airport.

If flying with real meteo and longer flights , you can listen to the ATIS of the airport you may above during descent (almost 12-20 nm around you)

I posted in another thread what I use now to keep in touch with meteo evolution while flying:
