CRASH! - SWAFO - 02-08-2005

Was just doing a quick ABQ-LAS flight before I go to work here in a few hours, and BAM! FS froze up for the FIRST TIME! To say the least,
I'm quite upset and disappointed, and not sure what caused it. I've recently begun installing the Freeware terrain mesh available here:
http://www.simviation.com/fsdterrainsrtm.htm

Has anyone else had problems with this terrain? That's the only culprit that I can think of. I was exactly 188.3NM from PGS VORTAC on
the 080 degree radial inbound. I was reading todays paper, and looked up to see that the aircraft wasn't moving at all, although the
sounds were playing (engine, ambient, etc.). I noticed that the ground below me looked like a light pink desert-scape, although in front of
me (about 50-60 miles), it looked like a light brown desert. Could there be a problem with the scenery? I tried re-loading my flight from
parked at the gate at KABQ, and it froze at 81% when it was activating the air traffic. Has anyone else had this problem?

I'm quite frustrated, and will probably take a short break from FS (but not the forums) until I find out what the problem is. I don't want to fly
when I've got the risk of having the program crash.

Re: CRASH! - Ryanamur - 02-08-2005

Hi Brad,

I think that's the one I use. It comes to a total size of 8.5Gb for the whole world right? If so, I nerver had any problems with it but I'm only using
Ultimate Terrain Alaska/Canada. Try renaming the FS9.cfg file. This will prompt FS9 to rewrite a new config file and hopefully it will solve your problem.

Re: CRASH! - SWAFO - 02-08-2005

Phil,
Thanks for your advice. I'll give it a whirl later on. Let's hope my RL flights later today don't turn out the same way!

Re: CRASH! - SWAFO - 03-08-2005

Now, everytime I click on the "FIND ROUTE" tab in the FS flight planner, the damn thing freezes up and I've got to manually close FS. Any
idea why?

Re: CRASH! - SWAFO - 03-08-2005

What could be causing this instability? I'd really like to get it fixed, and probably won't deal with FS anymore for a while if I've got to
reinstall everything.

Re: CRASH! - AeroJim - 03-08-2005

I know how a feel SWAFO with my sound problems with FSP. I actually had quite a similar problem w/ FS before i ever added an add-on,
do you have XP, if so, or any other program, did you recently install an MS upload, or a firewall, here are the steps it took me go to dxdiag,
and go to network and test your fs9 systems, something should pop up about the firewall blocking some aspects of fs9 and then tell it to
add fs9 as an exception, or go to your windows firewall, go to the exceptions tab and add fs9.

Re: CRASH! - SWAFO - 03-08-2005

Nope, no problems with the firewall. It seems that there's a problem with the world map included with the FS9 default flight planner.
Anyone know how to replace it, or what file it is in the FS9 directory/sub-directories? Everytime I view it (either when planning a flight, or
using the "MAP" feature to move my aircraft around in-game), FS9 freezes! I need this fixed!

Re: CRASH! - pegase - 03-08-2005

Brad,

In matter of aviation, you are the professional, the authority all of us listen .
In matter of reluctant computers and software... May be here some people around can give you some ideas. I will try.

If like me, you fly on line with refreshed meteo data, then cut your connection, define a preset meteo , RESTART your machine and try. Nowadays, an
online computer get various solicitation and attacks which can interfere badly with the running programs. directly or through the reaction of your
antivirus. also FS2004 reacts badly when trying to update the meteo something fails reaching the server

If it solves the problem, then you know you have to fix domething about your internet connexion and/or antivirus.

If the problem remains:
Think first about what changes occured on your computersince it was working fine. First of all, off course any flight sim config, add on or
accessories like yokes, engine units or pedals. But as well any other program. (especially those who change or install DirectX drivers).

If you suspect any new thing on your computer, then you can choose between uninstalling them or re-install your flight sim config above it. Depends
of the work and importance of the different programs.

If not, I don't see anything else than uninstall addon, check, uninstall anothe, check etc. until you get a stable configuration.

When all add ons are removed and FS2004 is still dodgy then, no more choice, you must uninstall. FS2004, make the usual "housekeeping" about HD
fragmentation, windows update, antivirus check and re-install.

On my experience this bit after bit method fixes 99% of the problems.

Despite the 1100110, computer is anything you like except exact science. Unlike aviation, there are no rules and procedures but just philosophy and
method to cut the big problem in smaller and smaller part until fwhat causes the mess is found or... removed.

Good luck and welcome in the world of software troubleshooters.

Re: CRASH! - SWAFO - 03-08-2005

Thanks for your message. I know a good bit about computers, however everything I try doesn't seem to get it to work properly. It's weird,
since I've never had this problem prior to yesterday. And no, I don't use real-weather information, I create my own custom weather. I
guess the only option I have left is to uninstall EVERYTHING, and RE-INSTALL everything! I'm not looking forward to that, and probably
won't get around to it for a few days. Oh well.

I'm affraid it is realistic. It is Grrr Rant Worry and I understand you need a break to cool down before going at it.

Brad, try removing the mesh you installed. Maybe that will fix the problem.

Re: CRASH! - SWAFO - 03-08-2005

Tried that, and no luck. The only other change I have made to my system is installing WINDOWS XP SP2... could this be causing a
problem?

Could be. If so, a reinstall will more likely be successfull. I have XP home. but I installed the SP2 previously to anything else.
Then I insalled FS 9, the patch 9.1 and went on lessons and checkrides.

When done I started to upload this and that and more. I am lucky for now, it still works. (May be 1 crash for 50 sessions)

When you install FS2004, it take your system as it is and install itselfs accordingly to what it finds. When system files changes after... who knows ?
I don't remember the details with XP SP2 but I have installed and upgraded loads of NT 4, 2000 and 2003 servers. You have lost in all the mumbo jumbo
in the cluf and others a warning that you MAY have to re-install or upgrade some applications afterward.

In daily language understand: Microsoft can't be held accountable of anything. Here we go.

Conclusion; I bet now 99;99% a re-install will save you.

Re: CRASH! - SWAFO - 03-08-2005

Would I simply be able to copy over my "addon scenery" directory, or do I have to reinstall ALL of these?

Re: CRASH! - SWAFO - 03-08-2005

Guess I'll attempt a re-install tonight. Turns out I lost my copy of FS9, now I've gotta run to Best Buy to grab another one. Plus I'll see
what else I could use Wink Damn electronic toystores!
