Why is the number 9 pronounced as niner?
Short answer, because the German word for "No" is "Nein" (SP??), so the phraseology we use is "Niner"...as to not confuse ATC
Yep, "nein" in German is pronounced the same way we say "nine".

Also it is proper military phraseology, just as five(5) should be pronuonced as "fife"
Was there also something with "3" pronounced as tree because it could be misheard as free?

7 is seven
8 is ate
